Thanksgiving Placemat Craft for Kids

aturkey1.jpgMike, over at Career and Kids, recently shared a Thanksgiving craft for kids. It reminded me of a craft that my daughter and I constructed last year for Thanksgiving.

We were hosting Thanksgiving dinner, and decided it would be fun to have homemade placemats for all of our guests. We traced my daughter’s hand on pieces of construction paper, and she turned each into a turkey. She then decorated the rest of the paper with stamps and markers.

To turn them into an heirloom of sorts, I had her write her name and age on the back of each placemat, so that we’d have a sample of her handwriting at age 4. Once they were done, I took clear Contact paper and covered each placemat. This made them easy to clean after dinner, and has kept them preserved to be used for years to come!

The only thing I would have done differently would be to do just one or two a day for a few days, instead of 9 all in one shot. The first few were fun and colorful. By the last few she was getting bored!

Wednesday my preschool class is making cornucopia placemats. I thought they’d enjoy taking them to the dinner table.

  2. Karen: How fun! I’d love to see a photo. Might be fun to do around here! :D

You’re sure to find some good stuff at these sites.

I’ll have to look at the printout of the cornucopia to find the web address. It’s at school, but I think it was from Bryback Manor.

That is a good idea! I’m sure she’ll look back one day and cherish them!

  5. Karen: Thanks for directing us to the links! I think your post will come in handy this week. :D Happy Thanksgiving!

Kailani: Thanks! I hope so. I enjoyed pulling them out this year and seeing just how her art and handwriting have changed in a year. I can’t imagine the waterworks that will start when I pull them out the year she goes off to college! :D Happy Thanksgiving!
