Toys for Adults and Children Alike

Dollies certainly aren’t just for children. Plenty of adults collect them. This dolly is made in Japan and is most popular among women over 60 years old who treat them as grandchildren. The doll tells its owner she loves her and welcomes her home. She also weighs as much as a small infant. (It actually makes me sad to think of these lonely grandmothers cradling an electronic doll.)
As the birthrate in Japan continues to decline, toy companies are struggling to come up with a range of products suitable for people of any age. Brain training games are also popular with the older set and one made in Japan is handheld with puzzles based on math and Japanese spelling. I suppose a PDA with a panel of games installed might be appreciated as well. I know my dad still enjoys playing Freecell and I taught my mom how to work a Sudoku puzzle just last month.
What kinds of games do your kids’ grandparents like to play?

My parents are total game freaks. Scrabble gets real cut throat, so we steer them toward things like Yatzee and Cranium.
Bald Man: I pretty much suck at board games so I better not visit your parents or I’ll be totally stressed out!
You’re too hard on yourself. It’s all about finding the RIGHT board game.
I’m with ya on the old people with dolls being sad. And what is up with this doll’s eyes? It looks possessed. creeeeepie!
Solitaire or Mah Jong on the computer for my dad. My mom is not, and has never been, a gamer. But she has become more of a bookworm than ever in her retirement–sneaking in a few pages at any moment and reading to Charlie even when he least seemed to be paying attention.
I remember my Grandfather and Grandmother playing the Hat Dance game when I was only 4 (one of my earliest memories). Its a game where each wears a hat and tries to knock the other persons off first. They must have been in their 60’s at the time.
Deb: You mean I shouldn’t get you one for your birthday?
Kristina: Lucky Charlie! I wonder if anybody ever retires from blogging and starts living a normal life? My brain is fried.
lemon_golfer: Thanks for the comment! What a cute game. Have you played it lately?
