Writing a Book with the Kids

We all spend a lot of time, I think (I hope!) reading stories to our kids. Like you, I have a few of their favorites, and mine, memorized. They are memorized not only because I’ve read them a hundred times each, but also because it makes it much easier to act it all out if you don’t have to hold the book, too! ;)

As with all good things, though, it’s sometimes fun to shake things up a bit and change how things are done. This week, that came with story time. The kids love reading stories with their dad, but this week they are writing one with him as well, complete with illustrations! It’s fun to hear how the stories that they’ve been told over the years are now shaping the ways they think stories should go. And, as you might guess, our 6 year old daughter would tell a different story than her 3 year old brother, so it’s funny to hear how the characters that they would each choose are meshed into one tale. Very cute. And can you go wrong with any activity whose supply list consists only of notebook paper and crayons?

What are some of your favorite creative activities to share with your kids?

do you mean children play their own parts from well known tales in their own way? That’s a great idea. I think this help them to improve their memory.
