The Chinese New Year begins Thursday and it’s good luck to ring in the new with lively, colorful decorations. The Chinese especially like bright shades of red embellished with gold. My sister in law makes elaborate lanterns and other decorations using the red Chinese New Year envelopes. I’m not quite that ambitious, but I also know Chinese New Year decorations are easy to find online and in stores specializing in Asian products. At the moment, I’m visiting my in laws in Queens. The neighborhood has a large Chinese community with several large Chinese markets and lots of smaller mom and pop stores. This is perfect for my Chinese New Year shopping. I already went out and picked up some brightly colored paper lanterns for my son and I to hang on Wednesday in time for the New Year.

Here are a few Chinese New Year decorations for you:

These traditional red paper Chinese lanterns are inexpensive enough to hang in every room of your house.

Lu-Hsing is the God of Wealth. He’s said to bring good fortune to your home so you want to have a couple of these in a nice prominent location.

When it comes to decorating for the Chinese New Year, it’s all about red and gold! Greet the new year with bold and vibrant colors and you’re off to a lucky start!
