Celebrations just finished up pet party week on their blog, and they shared several fun tips from party experts to help you plan a party for your pets.

My son’s in 4-H with our dog, and his 4-H club gets together for a summer party, and they bring the dogs. Dogs and kids have a camp out, play games and have a great time telling “dog” stories around the campfire.

And then there Gayla’s contribution on Supernanny Rules – the latest picture of her precious tiny Yorkie, Molly, who has had a very rough summer battling parvo and adverse reactions to vaccinations.  At 2.9 pounds, she has a very strong will to live.

If you or someone you know is thinking about adding a pet to your family check the internet.  There are rescues that operate on just about every breed – or check the SPCA or local animal shelters.  Unwanted or abandoned pets seem ultimately gracious to their new homes and masters.

Don’t forget to celebrate your new addition, and welcome them into the family.

The first thing you’ll want to plan is a meet and greet. Let all the dogs and their humans get to know each other (if they don’t already), and see how everyone gets along.

Set aside a corner of the yard for resting, walking, or just a time out if some of your furry friends get a little excited.

Here are some games that include the dogs, use your best judgement for what games will work the best for the guests at your party.

• Simon Says- With a dog twist. Have all of Simon’s commands involve interacting with your dogs.
• A treasure hunt- You can lead your doggie guests and their owners on a hunt for a hidden treasure (a bone). Divide your guests into three or four teams. Have hidden clues set up around the back yard for each team. The teams will follow the clues to a secret map, which leads them to the “treasure.”
• A doggie obstacle course relay- Have dogs and their owners maneuver through an obstacle course. You can include things like a small jump, weaving poles, a kiddie pool for everyone to hop in and out of, or hang blankets from a clothes line to make a tunnel to get through.
• Play musical dogs- Use your best judgement with this game. It will only work if the dogs all get along, and know each other. Even then this game will probably be mass chaos, but that’s half the fun! Have everyone get in a circle with their dog. When the music starts, start passing leashes, when the music stops the person without a dog is out.
• Play dog trivia with questions about famous dogs and their owners.

You can make your own cards by stamping a paw print border, with a paw print stamp, then writing your message in the middle.

Here are a couple fun ways to start your dog party invitations:

• You’re Invited to a Pawty!
• It’s a puppy pawty, and you’re invited!
• Calling all paw-ty animals!
• All Dogs Invited (humans optional)
• Please come for a doggone good time.
• This party’s gone to the dogs.

You will need to plan treats and party favors for both dogs and their people. Purchase, or make some doggie treats for all your dog’s friends. Make puppy chow and bone shaped sugar cookies for the 2 legged party goers.

Here are some dog cake recipes, and here are  ideas for a dog themed human cake, and a paw shaped cake or cupcakes. 

The theme is easy, you’ll need dog party supplies, cut out paw prints to stick on everything, hang some streamers (my dog prefers toilet paper, she runs through the house streaming it everywhere), cut out some dog bones from construction paper to dangle from the streamers.

Provide simple plastic dog bowls for your doggie friends, something they can take home as a present from the birthday dog.

Don’t forget to designate a “pooper scooper” area for the dogs to take a break in if they need to.
