Solo Mother

Ahh the kid’s asleep… what’s a single mother to do?

Hey, I’m not complaining here. The boy’s asleep, the house is a mess but I’ve been slowly working to put all the summer clothes away and find a place for all the winter goods. We had an incredibly frustrating but funny afternoon chasing tail lights through a nasty rainstorm in search of the Perfect Halloween Party but all we got was 2.5 hours in the car for what should have been a 40 minute drive, and never did get into the museum. Seems everyone else in the tri-state area had the same idea we did. Bummer. Worse, I haven’t driven since I lived overseas, not really, and it was hair-raising, reliving the terrifying moments on the road (bad drivers and the angriest husband trapped in the smallest space possible — no wonder I’ve been combating PTSD for three years!). But I settled into it and it was truly lovely to have my mother and my son all to myself for hours.

The question is, what to do? I’ve got a ton of books to read,  a house to clean, a job to finesse, a life to woo, a boy to dream with… But what do I do on a Saturday night at home?

I watch Burn Notice. I don’t have a television, so I’m late to the new shows on TV. I’ve never watched Survivor or Lost. I saw a few episodes of Greg and Dharma or no, what’s that one about the gay guy and his best friend? Whatever. Will and Grace — saw a few of those lounging on the couch at a friend’s house. But really? I’ve been TV free for … seven or eight years, now. I like it.

A few months ago, talk around the office brought up this cool new spy show, and I was curious. Now, I’m hooked. I just watched the second half of the Season 1 cliffhanger, and now I’m scrounging around online to find the first episodes of Season 2 to watch. So if you’d like to share my addiction from the beginning, click here to watch the pilot of Burn Notice online.

What do you do at home after the kids are asleep?

Lately, I’ve been falling asleep while tucking in the kid. Pretty pathetic, I know, but sleep can be a good thing, too.

We used to watch tons of TV, but since my stbx moved out, it’s been blissfully quiet in the evenings, and I don’t want to turn it back on.

Reading is my favorite, but I’ve recently gotten into shopping online. Dangerous, I know, but it can be fun to “window shop”, too.
