Found this video on AOL of Army Specialist Alexis Hutchinson’s mother — but because it’s an AP Video, I won’t embed the video from any of the sources I’ve found. Just click here to watch the video.

The Army cook is a single mother of a toddler. Her mother is already taking care of too many others to really be able to take on a baby, but when she heard her grandchild was going to be put in foster care, she got on a plane and went to pick him up. In the video, she says her daughter told her she was being shipped to Afghanistan for a special court martial.

WTF??? I don’t know if that’s true, but if it is? Shame on you, Army. Single parents should be able to serve their country without losing their families.

In all fairness, an Army spokesperson earlier said that this isn’t the way they treat military families. I’d like to see them put their money where their mouth is. Maybe Specialist Hutchinson isn’t devoted Army material, but does she have to be court martialed for having the guts to stand up for her baby?

  1. Wow. that’s sad and scary at the same time. :-(

When a person joins the military with children, they have to make up a family care plan. The plan is to have someone appointed (ahead of time) to care for their children if and when they have to deploy. No, the army is NOT wrong in having Specialist Hutchinson court martialed IF she had “faked” her family care plan. But in the chance that the person she had appointed flaked on her, then she should definitely not be court martialed. The military will not send someone overseas if they have children and their family care plan fails. But, they might look into having her separated from the military entirely because of this issue.

My personal views are, anyone who enlists has taken a step towards fighting for our country and for our freedom, so I thank everyone who has served and those who are still currently serving. But with that being said, joining the military when you have children is tricky. The military takes family care plans very seriously, so any mother/father who decides to enlist has to carefully plan out what they would do should they be sent overseas. You can’t just assume that just because you have children then the military will be lenient. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. We are at war, and those who enlist will most probably deploy. So, work it out before you sign that contract.
