In the wake of Ft. Hood, parents are facing hard questions from their children. How do you talk to your kids about issues of race, religion, mental health… senseless acts of violence?
I spoke at length ad nauseum to Jennifer Hewitt over at iVillage on Monday about hands on approaches to dealing with the scary stuff, and thank goodness she only pulled one quote from the pile.
Read “A Teachable Moment: How to promote tolerance in the aftermath of the Fort Hood shooting“.
I have two bits of advice for all you parents out there:
1. Wait until your kid brings it up and
2. in the meantime, check yourself very carefully for your own views on the subject. Don’t pass your fears or prejudices on to your kids.
