Solo Mother

oh for the love of a four-legged friend

Last October, a katten lobbied for membership in our little home. My son has disliked dogs since he was a little toddler of a kid and my uncle’s bull mastif slobbered him from head to toe. Frankly? I don’t blame the KoE for his dislike of dogs, and if you’d seen the amount of drool that oozed from the corners of Gunther’s mouth, you’d understand, too.

But lately, the KoE has been looking at dogs again, and asked if we could get one. “Someday, Boo,” I said absent-mindedly. “Someday.” That someday depends on my ability to earn enough money to take care of a dog–right now, working for a non-profit is inspiring, but makes for some poverty-level spending habits. It depends on the stability of our lives.

We had pets when I was a kid, starting with Morgan, a snide Afgan with a penchant for defecating behind the dining room curtains. He didn’t last long. Then there was Buddy, a Lhasa Apso we rescued from the pound… he hated Kermit the Frog and paper towel tube, and lived far longer than any dog should, well-loved every faltering step of the way. And we also had Molly, a sweet, Terrier mutt of undetermined origins, also a rescue, and the nicest dog anyone could ever meet. My son loves hearing stories about these dogs of my childhood.

Our old neighbor used to let the KoE take his big dogs for a walk. I’ve never seen my kid so proud. So yes, someday, we’ll get a dog again… when I can afford to take care of one. It would be nice if the ex would bother to make his child support payments, wouldn’t it?
