Solo Mother

so. tired.

I did it. I moved a two bedroom townhome by myself–with the assistance on moving day of Steve and Derrick, two of the nicest men a single mom could ever meet. They hauled all our stuff down all the stairs, loaded it on the truck, drove it to the new place, unloaded it all, and had unending patience while I dithered on the placement of one very heavy piece of furniture.

This move reinforced how difficult it is to be a single mother. What to do with the kid while I packed? Most nights it meant that I couldn’t even get started packing until 9PM at the earliest. My parents took him, too, and kept him for the final push. It was hard to pack boxes without help or company. The highlight of the week was sneaking out to Target with Amy for boy room loot and some of the swankest sheets I’ve ever slept upon. Oh the luxury! Sheets that FIT the bed! I’ve spent the last year and some sleeping on queen sized sheets over a full sized mattress…

It would have helped, too, to have a partner help with the unpacking. My mother came to the rescue, though. She drove us out to Ikea today so I could get the one, tiny part that was lost in the move… as well as a new set of instructions on how to put the monster together.

And then she came down to the condo to help me put it together.

I’m not really alone. I hope all you single moms out there have some loving hands to help you through difficult times.

Pics soon.

  1. I’m glad you’re all moved. Maybe you can get some extra rest this week.

While I’m not single, I can relate to having to do things myself. We don’t have any family around here and it makes it really hard sometimes to have such little kids without outside support. We’re thinking of moving soon. I certainly hope we’ll be closer to family.

I’m glad you were blessed with some people to help out a bit.

Hooray! I am extremely proud of you! It is so hard to move. I dont know what’s worse-packing, or deciding what to keep and what to give away. God bless, well done,
Much happiness in your new home,
    Mary

Mary, I gave away so much stuff! and still, I have so much stuff. How does that work?

Karen, I hope, if you have the opportunity to move close to family, you do it. My kid is so lucky to see his grandparents every day.

  5. My stuff procreates in my home. At least, that seems to be the only reasonable explanation. I have no idea where it all comes from. :)

Way to go on the move! I loathe packing and moving crap, the second (and last for while) time I moved it was mostly in garbage bags lol

Glad you’ve been able to find things so far!

  7. I hate moving there is no way I would want to tackle this by myself. I have a lot of respect for all of you Single Mothers out there. I am a Man and I will say there is no way I could ever accomplish what you do in a single day. I am glad you found some help. Some of Men are good guys.

Please dont think I am spamming but I have a membership forum dedicated to teaching Single Moms Basic home repairs. Being raised in a family without a father I know the stress My Mother went through raising us kids, let alone when something broke that she knew nothing about. I only have a few years to retirement and thought I would start a membership forum where I can offer help and hopefully build a membership that will help each other.

Dennis, not spam at all. I’ll put a link to your site on my blog with pleasure. I was going to write more about being able to take care of basic things… I think somewhere around here is a post about the “You Don’t Need a Man to Fix It” book my mom had back in the 70’s, and a friend gave me “Dare to Repair” when I moved into my first house as a single mother. Welcome!

  9. Thank You,

I am happy to have found your site. I will bookmark it and check back often. To me it seems like you have a good site with lots of valuable information. I cant help to say that this insprires me to keep doing what I am doing. I am always very careful when posting with a link. The last thing I want is someone thinking I am a lurker looking for Single Women

What a world we have become.
