What songs helped get you through the hardest times?

I dunno, this might not appeal to everyone. I was astonished to learn that music was just not very important to my ex, when it is essential to my basic happiness and well-being.

Maybe he could learn something from me ;-)

What songs get you through the toughest times? For me it changes, but everytime I think back on the relationship I had with my son’s father, this song by The The puts it all into focus. The song is called, August and September, and the chorus is this:

What kind of man was I, who would sacrifice your happiness to satisfy his pride? What kind of man was I, who would delay your destiny to appease his tiny mind?”

Mind BombThere are other songs that get me through whatever mood I’m in; this weekend, at a piano bar in the Village, an extraordinary woman named Terri White blew our minds when she sang for a friend she’d lost in the recent violent storms that swept the south.

What music brings you comfort, happiness, and glee?

When I was going through my divorce I was kept going by this track “Free” by Ultra Nate..

The strong sound of “you’re free to do want you want to do” spurred me on!

I have uploaded this song to my Box.net widget (My Shared Files – left sidebar) on my blog page if you fancy a listen :)

  2. I go old school with Judy Collins (though I think the song was in “Fame?”) and Starmaker…
“Here as I watch the time go by
How I’d like to sail away
    Leaving all my past behind
But I know I’d only last for a couple of days…”
Sort of a bummer song but it helps with one footin’ in front of the other. Great post! I am sure I will think about it all day and I shuffle through iTunes.

Oh don’t even get me started:

When I feel blue: Somewhere Over The Rainbow

When I feel like Madonna: Vogue

When I feel younger than I am: Guster’s Satellite.

    Lordy great post.

Hi, Banana! I remember when that song came out, thinking what a great voice she has. Thanks for bringing her back to my ears!

Amy, Judy Collins was on my list of songs, but I couldn’t think of just one I love to listen to. I love the old songs. What about Poi Dog Pondering!?

Kim, those are great. My weirdest consolation song is “Superheros” from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I don’t know why, but it did the trick:

I’ve done a lot, God knows I’ve tried
To find the truth–I’ve even lied
But all I know Is down inside
    I’m bleeding

And super heroes come to feast
To taste the flesh not yet deceased
And all I know Is still the beast
    Is feeding.

And crawling on the planet’s face
Some insects called the human race
Lost in time, lost in space
    And meaning.

Great question! When I was angry and waiting for my court date, the song “No More Tears” (Enough is Enough) by Barbara Streisand and Donna Summer really helped. Also the song “Something More” by Sugarland, the following verses:

    There’s gotta be something more
    Gotta be more than this
I need a little less hard time, I need a little more bliss …

    Thanks!

Hi, Ike! I’m trying to think of what music is getting me through the days right now. I think it’s a band called Cousteau. Lush vocals. Dreamy.
