Feminism is Self-Preservation

I want more women in science because I want better science.
When you realize that drug scientists, mostly men, haven’t been testing medicines on females, rat or human, you know the best drugs aren’t being invented.
If women were in the labs, they would be asking this question, “how does that effect women? how does that interact with estrogen and progesterone?”
And I’d have access to safer, more effective medical care. It’s a matter of self-preservation really.
The same applies to government.
If half of each party were women – we’d have a different country. One that asks fundamentally basic questions like, “How will this …read more

Democracy Works on Self Interest

Democracy only works if people vote in their own self-interest.

It’s a system entirely based on self-interest actually.

It’s a system based on the idea that if everyone votes for their own self-interest then in the end we’ll arrive at solutions that meet the MAJORITY’S interests.

You muck up the system if you start voting in other people’s self-interest – say your husband’s self interest or your company’s self-interest.

It’s not unselfish to decide your husband’s interest supersede yours. It’s not unselfish to decide your company’s interest supersede yours. It’s not unselfish – it’s stupid. It’s self-sabotage and and it’s self-defeating.

Human Knot

My husband and I went on a marriage retreat this weekend. We had participated in a marriage education program in our area called Vow.

No one steps up and I ask a …read more

State Delegate – Me

I was elected to be a Texas State Delegate for the Democratic Party on Saturday. First I was a precinct delegate and now I’ll represent my county at the state convention.
How cool is that?
I’ve never been able to participate quite this deeply in politics before because I was always reporting on it for newspapers. Reporters report, they don’t participate. So this year, I’ll participate and then report on what it’s like to participate – to you.
So, I got up and made a little speech and got elected to go be a Hillary delegate.
I have cousin …read more

Add Women Change Everything!

O, The Oprah Magazine and The White House Project have joined together in a leadership training effort for women. They will be hosting Women Rule Leadership Training Program for 80 women with a vision June 20 – June 22 in New York City.
The stimulus has been this election season which has made clear that women are underrepresented in politics. Out of 50 (52?) states only 9 governors are women. We’ve fallen to 71st in the world according to female representation in political office. 71! It’s not just political, less than 3% of Fortune 500 companies are headed by women, only ONE Fortune …read more
