How To Tell If You Have Adult ADHD (Because It’s Not Just For Kids)

How To Tell If You Have Adult ADHD (Because It's Not Just For Kids)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is not just for kids. In fact, adult ADHD is more common than you think. And it can manifest itself in relationships, marriage, jobs and everyday activities, even though many adults don’t even realize they have this disorder. Oh, I’m just unorganized, I’m just easily distracted, or I’m so absent-minded are often excuses for what really could be adult ADHD. How can you tell if you have this? We talked with Susan Krauss Whitborne, Professor of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts and author of Abnormal Psychology, Clinical Perspectives on Psychological Disorders who has studied and written about adult ADHD. Take a look at these symptoms and see if you can relate! More »

‘Startling’ Amounts Of Background TV Could Be Contributing To Kids’ ADHD

'Startling' Amounts Of Background TV Could Be Contributing To Kids' ADHD

Did you know the average child is exposed to nearly four hours of TV a day? And if you think simply having the TV on in the background while you eat or get dressed doesn’t count, think again. Researchers just conducted a national survey of kids’ exposure to TVs tediously playing in the background and they say it’s “startling.” And it could be contributing to A.D.H.D. More »

A Rebuttal To XOJane’s ‘Anonymous Actress’ Against Adderall

A Rebuttal To XOJane's 'Anonymous Actress' Against Adderall

Man. Between doped-up NASCAR drivers, the New York Times and certain platinum blond bloggers, Adderall is getting a crazy bum rap these days. The latest anti-Adderall opus I’ve seen comes from an anonymous “Hollywood actress” writing on XOJane that elevates the ‘my-experience-is-self-evidently-universal’ genre to a whole new level. It needs to stop. More »

More Parents Than Ever Have No Shame In Medicating The Crap Out Of Their ADHD Kids

More Parents Than Ever Have No Shame In Medicating The Crap Out Of Their ADHD Kids

Medicating children continues to be anxious territory for parents, as treating a toddler with bipolar disorder certainly isn’t what your average family is expecting at the pediatrician’s office. Yet with more mild conditions in comparison, such as ADHD, more parents than ever apparently aren’t hesitating in filling those Ritalin prescriptions. So much so that the number of prescriptions for children has jumped in eight years — way up.
Reuters reports that between 2002 and 2010, Ritalin use in children grew 46%. We’re talking a growth of 800,000 prescriptions a year. That may add fuel to the narrative that ADHD is over-diagnosed, but other doctors are quick to point out that what we’re really encountering is a lack of embarrassment: More »

ADD Is Over-Diagnosed…And A Convenient ‘Out’ For Lazy Parents And Teachers

ADD Is Over-Diagnosed...And A Convenient 'Out' For Lazy Parents And Teachers

I’m starting to wonder if it’s possible for doctors, teachers and parents to diagnose kids with anything other than Attention Deficit Disorder? According to a new study, the rate that kids are diagnosed continues to increase by 5.5% each year, but are there really that many more kids with ADD and ADHD? It seems like this has become a convenient “out” for many lazy teachers, doctors and parents who don’t know what to do with kids who don’t fit the “mold”. More »

Are We Powerless Against Procrastination?

Are We Powerless Against Procrastination?

So it’s Friday afternoon, and you’ve got that one thing left to work on before you can Officially Start the Weekend. And you’re going to get to it, you swear, just as soon as you check your email, and respond to that Facebook post, and grab a coffee, and … Before you know it, you’re scrambling to get it done by the end of the day, your inner monologue scolding because you always. do. this. Procrastination! We’ve all succumbed (some more times than others). Is it a sign of laziness, or lack of discipline, that makes us put off difficult or unpleasant tasks as long as we reasonably can? Could learning to manage time better, learning to focus, help us be more productive, less-stressed workers? More »

The FDA Won’t Ban It, But We Will: 8 Foods You Didn’t Know Contained Food Dye

The FDA Won't Ban It, But We Will: 8 Foods You Didn't Know Contained Food Dye

The dark side of artificial food coloring has been discussed since at least the 1970′s, with big concerns over a link between dyes and hyperactivity in kids, but only recently has the food and drug administration actually agreed to evaluate studies proving the link. While European countries have already started to ban the use of certain dyes, like blue #1, yellow #5 and 6, the FDA advisory committee ruled yesterday that there’s not enough evidence proving that they’re linked to ADHD, so they wont be banning artificial colors from foods just yet.
