Fast Food Flashback: 8 Bizarre Commercials From Super Bowl Sundays Past

Taco Bell courted controversy this Super Bowl season with an ad telling people who bring vegetables to parties that everyone secretly hates them (they’ve since decided to pull it). Bleh. Let’s revisit a simpler fast food advertising era, when Super Bowl commercials didn’t try to shame people into eating Doritos-flavored tacos and instead enticed us with catchy jingles and Carson Daly and dancing burger women. Why Taylor Swift’s Diet Coke Deal Is Even Worse Than Beyonce’s Pepsi Deal

Why Taylor Swift's Diet Coke Deal Is Even Worse Than Beyonce's Pepsi Deal

First, Pepsi signed a $50 million deal with Beyonce to pump up their brand. Now, Taylor Swift is shilling for Diet Coke. Announced over the weekend (via a video on Taylor Swift’s YouTube channel claiming the drink as one of her “great loves”), the deal is expected to be more than a few 30-second commercial spots. So now both brands are going to try their hardest to make fans believe that drinking carbonated sugary drinks is an essential part of their favorite celebrities’ lifestyle. Everyone Should Watch This Honest Coca-Cola Obesity Commercial (And Pass It On)

Everyone Should Watch This Honest Coca-Cola Obesity Commercial (And Pass It On)

Last week, Coca-Cola addressed its increasingly relevant role in America’s obesity issues for the first time … by releasing a commercial exonerating the company from blame. Sometimes, a commercial can plant the seed for a craving that will nag at your appetite all week. But a lot of ad campaigns just kind of make us go “meh” and move on…to the healthier options in our fridge. Some funny commercials—like Miracle Whip‘s mock PSA ad—do actually stand out for their humor, but are they persuading us to run to the store for sandwich spread? More »

Special K Uses “Plus Size” Women In Ads, Spreads Mixed Body Image Message

Special K Uses "Plus Size" Women In Ads, Spreads Mixed Body Image Message

Special K is beginning to use “plus size” women in new cereal advertisements. I put quotations around “plus size” because I’m not at all convinced that these women qualify– “regular size” is more probably more apt. Like so much media that tries to be “body positive,” the new Special K campaign winds up sending totally mixed messages about body image. More »
