Dogs get Alzheimer’s Disease too…

Does your dog…

get ‘lost’ when wandering around the house and seem to get stuck in corners and behind furniture?

isn’t deaf but starts to ignore you when you call his/her name?

start having ‘accidents’ around the house even right after having been outside ?

he cocker spaniel who gets “stuck” in corners or behind furniture…

It could be that the dog is suffering from Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome, an “…age related deterioration of cognitive abilities characterized by behavioral changes in dogs that cannot be wholly attributed to general medical conditions such as neoplasia (cancer), infection or organ failure. “ (ref)

It’s often referred to as ‘old dog syndrome’ or ‘dog senility’ and is thought to be the result of the same processes as happens to humans suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Camera as memory for Alzheimer’s patients ?

Can a wearable digital camera help jog the memory of those with memory problems.

It’s an idea that is gaining momentum. Sensecam, a camera produced by Microsoft, is currently being tested by a number of universities in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

The Sensacam fits in the palm of your hand and can store up to 30,000 images. It is designed to take photos every 30 seconds of daily events which can then be played back later at high speed to jog a person’s memory.

A 63 year old woman with memory loss (caused by a brain infection) has been testing the camera. She used the camera for two weeks, spending one hour every other day reviewing the images. As a result, her memory increased to such a degree that after two weeks she had about 90% recall of the events she had experience. Prior to using the camera, she would forget everything within 5 days after the event.

It’s early days but the results are looking promising.

This month the Alzheimer Society of Canada is challenging people to commit themselves to making brain health a priority. They are running a nationwide awareness campaign called Heads Up for Healthier Brains.

Their aim is to make people more aware of the connection between healthy living and healthy brains.

Ways of making this commitment include…

- choosing activities that challenge your brain
- being socially active
- choosing a healthy lifestyle
- protecting your head from injury

The Alzheimer Society of Canada has launched BrainBooster, an online gym to help Canadians maintain their commitment to brain health. The gym offers challenging games and puzzles, brain boosting recipes, and exercises. Canadians can access the gym by visiting the Alzheimer Society of Canada website.

Wonder if this idea will spread further than Canada ?
