What does an accused serial cat killer look like? Apparently, he looks like your next door neighbor. If the teen pictured below were standing beside me at a Ben & Jerry’s, I certainly would never guess… cat killer. Perhaps he’s innocent, but I do hope the truth comes out either way.

On Monday, 18-year-old Tyler Hayes Weinman was charged with 19 counts of animal cruelty. In addition, he was charged with 19 counts of improper disposal of dead animals and four counts of burglary.

Weinman allegedly murdered family pets and left them to be discovered by their owners. He faces a possible 158 years in prison.

If the charges prove true, this young man obviously needs a great deal of psychological help. Studies have shown that animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people. Cats can be such sweet, trusting and loving creatures. Anyone who could mutilate a feline, I believe, could do the same to a human.

If you suspect animal abuse in your community, get in immediate touch with your local humane society or animal shelter.

About the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®)

From the About page of their website:

The ASPCA was the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. Our mission, as stated by our founder, Henry Bergh, in 1866, is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.”

My favorite piece is the keychain-dog tag combo – one for you and one for your dog! It’s like sharing half of a locket!

Michael Vick’s house became almost as infamous as he did last year when his dogfighting ring and subsequent animal cruelty were discovered. He sold the property in Surry County, Virginia, last May for $450,000 (thought it was appraised at $747,000) and it has since been put up for auction. The real estate developer, however, claims he’s spent an additional $50,000 in repairs after the house was vandalized and is now asking for $1.1 million.

Jalie’s Butterflies, an animal advocacy group, wants to turn the property into an animal shelter for abused dogs. It includes the main house, a basketball court, four outbuildings and a whole lot of dog cages. The main house has two master suites, a media room and a two-car garage. So far, nearly $13,000 has been raised. If the goal is not reached the house donations will got to the ASPCA.

“The project isn’t a political statement or an attempt to point fingers at those involved in the mistreatment of these defenseless dogs. This is a chance to give back to the spirit of the animals that were harmed. It is a chance for animal lovers to contribute to a noble cause. It is a chance to create a happy final chapter to a sordid and tragic tale.”

Michael Vick is currently serving a 23-month sentence for the dogfighting conspiracy. The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback and three co-defendants raised and trained pit bulls for fighting in the area behind the house. Several dogs that did not perform well in test fights were executed.
