In 2005 researchers at Cornell University determined that the potent compounds in apples appear to ‘…protect the brain from damage and may even help to ward off Alzheimer’s disease’. (An Apple a Day for Alzheimer’s)

In 2006 research at the University of Masschusetts Lowell found that ‘…apple juice consumption may actually increase the production in the brain of the essential neurotransmitter acetycholine, resulting in improved memory’. (UMass Lowell research shows benefits of apple juice on neurotransmitter affecting memory)

Sounds like a reason to eat more apples and drink more apple juice to me…

Strawberries come into the news again as one of the bestter antioxident foods for combatting Alzheimer’s and other memory loss conditions. A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (July issue) was conducted by the Univ. of Oslo, Norway, the Univ. of Minnesota, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute involving 1113 foods and beverages.

This tasty berry came out has having the third highest antioxident concentration among all the foods tested. Blackberries and walnuts ranked higher, with artichoke hearts and cranberries following closely behind.

Since antioxidents destroy harmful free radicals that seem to contribute to the development of cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, among others, much research seems to be concentrated on foods containing these.

More information about this study can be found at Alzheimer’s Daily News, (Sept. 8 issue): http://alznews.org

Strawberries are one of my husband’s and my favorite foods. We enjoy them in many ways, especially fresh in fruit salads (I ate a dish of strawberries and pineapple for breakfast this morning) and served as toppings over pancakes and waffles.

One of my “Country Kichen” columns (which I write for print and online publications) concerns strawberries. Check it out at: http://www.seedsofknowledge.com/kitchen57.html/
