Etsy Weekend Shopping – Aprons

I was watching a cooking show this weekend where the host uses 5 ingredients per dish. It’s a pretty good show, but what caught my attention was that she was actually acting like a real cook. No long sleeves down hanging in the food. Her hair was pulled back. She was wearing an apron.
The first thing I do when entering the kitchen is to pull my long hair up and back. Nobody wants any of that in their food. Yuck. I push up my sleeves and make sure that nothing is going to interfere with my work. I don’t use …read more

Making Quilts from Old Garments

Utilizing scraps and old garments for quilts and even for clothing was a popular practice among the pioneers. In the early days of our country, homemakers usually either made their own fabric or recycled what they had on hand. Rarely did they have the money to purchase new fabric from the general store.
Nowadays, in our stressed economy, recycling garments has become popular once again. Not because fabric is scarce, but because people can’t afford to purchase new.
I used fabric from old garments for quilts and for my daughter’s clothing many years ago. It was fun to pour over the quilts …read more
Aprons in Art, Business & Memories

I discussed Aprons as Fabric Art in a previous post and mentioned how they’ve also become collectors’ items. I’ve recently learned about aprons as business.
Sarah O. Green, of Mountain Ash Design, creates aprons from vintage and other recycled fabrics for a unique business that I feature at Home Biz Notes. She also makes other items from these fabrics and older clothing that put her in the category of operating a “green” businesses, as well.
Aprons that bring back memories seem to be making a comeback. I also recalled that my first “clothing for sale” project consisted of aprons I made to …read more
Aprons As Fabric Art

Aprons as fabric art! I hadn’t thought of placing aprons in this category. I’d always considered them as utilitarian, sometimes as an accessory if frilly and fancy. However, I recently saw a program, on a Quilting Arts DVD, that featured aprons throughout the decades. Perhaps you’d call them wearable art.
Collecting aprons of the early 20th century seemed the focus here. You also could make aprons using patterns from this era. Embellishing the aprons is another art.
My mom, grandmother and aunt, as well as other ladies of their era always wore an apron over their dresses. In those days, most women …read more
50s Style Apron

I used to have this red apron that was made for me by an ex-fiance’s sister. Or maybe it was a cousin. That part is not important. What is important is that I wore that apron for years. It was red with a small flower pattern, a gathered skirt, and a lace and ribbon trim. It was cute and useful – definitely kept my clothes clean when I was a young wife, just learning to cook. I don’t know what happened to that apron, but I miss it.
I found a couple of really cute aprons on Etsy today. This one …read more
Halloween Costumes – Quilted & Patchwork

I was shopping at a local store and noticed the Halloween display…costumes, decorations, candy and more. I remarked to the clerk, who was arranging items, that they seem to get earlier and earlier with Halloween displays each year.
He agreed, then added that they already had much of their Christmas stuff in the stockroom and soon would be putting it out!
Quilted & Patchwork Costumes
Then I began thinking…what about Halloween costumes with quilted and patchwork designs. Have you done any of these?

Scarescrow costumes made from patchwork shirt and denim pants or overalls
Quilted or appliqued shawl to accompany a …read more
