At the beginning of November, I read of Christine M. Rupprecht, MSN, RN, a nursing specialist for the Army’s Regional & Pain Management Initiative at Walter Reed Medical Center. Ms Rupprecht had been awarded the prestigious Celina Field Caregiver Award by the National Pain Foundation (NPF).
When I read about Ms Rupprecht and what the award stands for (recognizing individuals for excellence in caregiving and for their devotion to helping those living with pain), I knew I had to try see if I could interview her. According to the press release issued by the NPF, "The National Pain Foundation is …read more

Earlier this year, I introduced “Christina,” a friend of mine who has multiple medical issues and knows what it is like to live with chronic pain. She has kindly offered to write up posts and thoughts as she comes up with ideas. One of those posts was the very informative post on coping with a dry mouth, which can be a very painful side effect of many medications (Painful dry mouth from medications). After that post, we decided to call her Christina, in order to protect her privacy. She then wrote this helpful post on keeping your records straight: Here’s …read more

Staying or getting fit does play a role in pain and chronic pain (no, getting fit does not have to hurt!!), so this recommendation fits well here, I think. Kelly Turner, from Grounded Fitness sent along this message for us to share with our readers. I think it looks interesting so I hope you check it out:

Rules on how to be a better patient

Earlier, I put up a post on doctors’ rules: Does your doctor follow the rules? Well now, there the doctor who wrote those rules, came out with some patient rules. Honestly, as a nurse, these rules are so close to the truth, it’s not funny.
What do you think about these rules? Anything you’d like to discuss?

Guest post from Grounded Fitness: Susan Watiker

Susan Watiker, one of the bloggers for b5media’s newest health and wellness blog, Grounded Fitness, agreed to write a guest post for us.
There are a couple of really good reasons I decided to get into yoga, and chronic lower and upper back pain were right at the top of the list.
Let’s start with issues of flexibility and strength. For those of us who suffer from back pain, the lack of flexibility and strength in our muscles only contributes to our pain.

Call out for Company’s Calling participants
July 13, 2008 by Marijke Durning, RN

Company’s Calling, a popular Monday feature, hasn’t appeared for a while because I ran out of volunteers who wished to be interviewed. I would love to get the feature going again because I get emails (and comments) from people who appreciate learning how others have dealt with and who are dealing with their issues of chronic pain.
When people are living with chronic pain, they often feel alone – and we definitely know that they aren’t. Would you or someone you know be interested in sharing your story? You can remain anonymous if you would like and you can answer the …read more
Top 10 June posts at Help My Hurt

I like to see what posts bring the most traffic here – what people are interested in reading. Sometimes, I think I’ve got a post that will be incredibly interesting and everyone will want to “Stumble” (use stumbleupon.com to spread the news) and then very few people read it. Other times, I think it’s an obscure little post, and the views go through the roof.
Since the point of the blog is to address pain in general, I try to cover as much as I can. Unfortunately though, chronic pain is a very large part of illness and disability, and …read more
Painful dry mouth from medications

On May 25th, I posted information written by a friend of mine who we identified as “Suzie Q,” for privacy reasons. She has many health issues and is very eager to share her knowledge with people who may be able to identify with her and maybe benefit from what she has learned along the way.
So, she will now be referred to as Christina, and she has written yet another great post full of information. This post is on the horrible dry mouth that can affect many people who take medications for chronic pain or for the side effects of their …read more
