Last night during his bath time our son started to laugh. As minor an even as it sounds, it was absolutely incredible. I was frozen in awe. My wife heard it a few days prior, but this was my firs exposure. Until then, my son’s repertoire of happy sounds was rich with coos, gurgles and shrieks, but featured no distinct laughs. He came close several times, but no cigar despite how many stupid faces and noises I made.

I wasn’t really expecting it when it happened, but something about how his foot slipped down the end of the tub triggered a cluster of the cutest, most genuine laughs I’ve ever heard. Maybe the slippery surface of the big blue tub tickled his feet, or maybe it coincided with a funny face I was making, but the result was awesome.

I honestly didn’t think I would be that amazed by his laugh, but I was stricken. I didn’t think as a parent I would find every little advancement so incredible, but every day when he learns something new I am freshly in awe. I only wish I could have caught it on video camera to share with the rest of my family, or to set his cherubic giggle as my mobile ring tone.
