I combined the face of Tom Cruise and the hair of Will Smith, and came up with this. I was looking for a look that Tom Cruise might be able to pull off. Isn’t he adorable, yet menacing?

The conclusion of this study reported in Scientific America, states

The results of this study suggest that male pattern baldness is not a surrogate measure of an important risk factor” for heart attacks or for atherosclerosis without symptoms

So now that we know that just because we are bald, does not mean that a heart attack is in our future – what other things can we worry about?

The site has only been around for a week or so, and already has 200 members. It certainly is growing fast. There are forums, and interesting articles. You can meet new people (I just joined, so you can seek me out). You can post pictures and videos. I am sure you know how it works.

Social Networking for Baldies

So its the end of Movember.  How did you get on with growing a mustache?
Was it a great and successful experiment?  Are you glad that its the end of the month and you can shave off that ’stache?

Or are you liking how its kind of keeping you warm in the winter, but just don’t like how it itches.  If that is the case, then a design group from Iceland called  Vik Prjónsdóttir has got just the thing for you.  A woolen beard cap.  It covers your entire head…and comes with a very distinguished mustache.  If it was socially acceptable for a woman to be sporting one of these, I would definitely wear it.  I wonder if it comes in pink.

Trichotillomania. Of Greek origin: trich (hair) + tillein (to pull) + and maniaor (frenzy; morbid desire). Put it all together and you get the compulsive urge to pull one’s hair out.

It’s estimated the 1% – 5% of the world’s population suffers from “trich,” and approximately 2/3s of those who suffer are women. Trichotillomania is classified as an impulse control disorder and may be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Both medication as well as therapy have been successful in controlling the disorder.

What is a Flowbee?

Ah, now that’s a blast from the past. I never used one, so I can’t blame my hair loss on it. Though I recall jokes about the Flowbee being responsible for such.

I remember the Wayne’s World knock off… The Suck-n-Cut.

“It sucks while it cuts.”

“Well, it certainly does suck.”

I can still picture Garth golden locks being eaten by the device.

It turns out the Flowbee is still available for a mere $60. Make it $90 and you get a “Super Mini Vac” so you don’t have to use your own household vacuum.

Alas and alack, I will never have enough hair to need the Flowbee. If my hair gets to be 1/2″ long, it’s way… way too long.

Sigh…

Team Alopecia is a brand new website for alopecians, and their supporters. The site features: a ‘reviews’ section for alopecia related products and services; a ‘Superstars’ page highlighting accomplished and high-profile alopecians; a ‘videos’ area with alopecia and wig/hair-extension related videos; dedicated areas for kids and for teens; forums, news and research updates; a calendar listing-alopecia events, fundraisers, and support group meetings; and so much more!

So, I’m poking my nose around there now, and already it gets a positive review based solely on the fact that the bug-eyed mug of Signore Collina is featured above the fold! What can I say? I’m a soccer fan.

Seriously, though, it looks like a pretty nice site. A few menu items… “In the News,” which looks a bit like a blog… only without the RSS feed. (Minor deduction.) “Research” product “Reviews.” “Rookies” for those who are new to life with alopecia. There’s lots more. They also offer a monthly newsletter for which I’ll be signing up.

Overall I’d recommend it. In fact, I’m gonna throw this one in the links section for posterity. Check it and other Baldiness-approved sites out; links are listed way, way down at the bottom on the right sidebar.
