Baldness and its Myths Are Discussed on Oprah

Last week on Oprah, a very special episode was aired. For the first time in 22 years, the audience was completely comprised of men. I know…unheard of, right. The reason for this was, Dr Mehmet Oz hosted the show entitled 300 Men Ask Dr Oz. One of the subjects discussed on this show was baldness.
According to Dr Oz (from The Oprah Winfrey Show),
Hair loss happens when two hydrogen molecules DHT (dihydrotestosterone) attach to testosterone. This poisons the hair follicles and causes them to change from making normal hair to peach fuzz like material, which is …read more

A Problem Most of Us Will Never Have

I just finished watching the movie, Evan Almighty – starring Steve Carell. Don’t worry, I won’t tell you my views on this movie. I don’t review movies in general, and definitely not Hollywood ones. However, there is a scene in this movie that made me think about hair. If you have seen the movie, then you probably know the one I am talking about.
It’s when Evan starts discovering the changes occurring around him. He is doing his morning grooming routine. As soon as he starts shaving, his hair grows back as quickly as …read more

Book: Medicalized Masculinities

Here’s an interesting looking book: Medicalized Masculinities, edited by Dana Rosenfeld and Christopher Faircloth. From the Book Description out at Amazon.com:
When medicalization—the characterization of human traits in terms of disease and ailment—first appeared as a concept in the 1970s, most social science gender scholarship focused on female or genderless bodies. The work on men, health, and medicine was scant and tended to depict masculinity as intrinsically damaging to men’s health.
Medicalized Masculinities considers how these threads in scholarship failed to consider the male body adequately and presents cutting-edge research into the definition and regulation of masculinity by medicine. Renowned health and …read more

Baldness Detection Critical to Successful Transplant Surgery

That’s the argument put forth by Drs. Bernstein and Rassman of Bernstein Medical in the latest issue of the journal Hair Transplant Forum. The journal is published by The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), and the lead article this time around is “Densitometry and Video-microscopy.”
In the article the doctors argue that a close, clinical examination of a patients scalp has many benefits:

Better identification of good surgery candidates
Better forecasting of future hair loss patterns
Better understanding of the patients hair characteristics
Better planning of donor and recipient areas

This should be a no-brainer if you are considering hair transplant surgery. Make sure …read more

“Rapunzel” Has Lost Her Hair

At least she has in Karen Boettcher-Tate adaptation of the fairy tale. The Phipps Center in Hudson, Wisconsin is presenting this new twist on the classic Grimm Brothers story later this month. Things start off commonly enough… Rapunzel’s dad gets nabbed for petty larceny by a witch and pays the standard first-born fine. After that it gets a little odd.
When the German brothers wrote the classic tale almost 200 years ago, they may not have imagined that their heroine would have the last name Schwartzbuckle. Nor would they have guessed that eyeglasses and baldness would figure prominently in the story …read more

Dead Famous 2 Out on DVD

Dead Famous: The Complete Series 2, starring our very own Ms. Porter, is now available on DVD in the UK. (Amazon US don’t seem to stock it.)
Look at that cover shot?

Gail before her alopecia. And such a serious look. I suppose it’s befitting a paranormal investigation.

Media Alert: Today Show Discussing Baldness Tomorrow

Set your VCRs (or for those of you already in the 21st century “TiVos”), because NBC’s Today show will be discussing among other things the new laser comb in a segment on baldness.
Here’s the promotional teaser:
Is There A Cure For Baldness?
Baldness… some men embrace it… others, well… they try to hide it. Men try lotions and potions, even plugs. One company recently unveiled a new comb that stimulates growth. But is there really a way to cure the curse of genetics? We’ll look at this question tomorrow.
