Fake Made Fantastic: 6 Natural Sunless Tan Products To Keep Melanoma Survivors (& The Rest Of Us!) Safe

Fake Made Fantastic: 6 Natural Sunless Tan Products To Keep Melanoma Survivors (& The Rest Of Us!) Safe

Having grown up as an extremely pale person — really, it’s nearly impossible to find foundation for my skin tone — I understand the desire to be tan. People used to call me Casper, Morticia, Wednesday…basically, any supernatural or superweird being with skim milk skin.

However, going gold does not have to mean harming your body. there are dozens of reasons to go sunless for your tan — these are just a few of the means by which to do it. More »

Natural Shampoo: What It Is, What It Isn’t, And Which Ones Are Best

Natural Shampoo: What It Is, What It Isn't, And Which Ones Are Best

I’ve written at length, several times, about my growing interest in using body care products that are as “natural” as possible. So you can imagine my surprise when I found my hippie-dippie shampoo bar from LUSH contained sodium lauryl sulfate, an ingredient I try to avoid at all costs (sulfates are a controversial chemical ingredient in the beauty world, and I’d rather not use them because I think they’re too harsh on my hair). In my quest to find a new shampoo I can feel good about using, I learned quite a bit about natural and organic shampoo: what it is (and what it isn’t), what to avoid when shopping for shampoo, and some of the best brands to try. Split Ends Are The Reason You Can’t Get A Job, According To Very Stupid Survey

Split Ends Are The Reason You Can't Get A Job, According To Very Stupid Survey

Ladies, here’s a tip from British department store Debenham’s: Instead of wasting time trying to boost your resume with volunteer work and internships, what you really need to do is get thee to a nail salon. Because according to a survey of 2,000 people who had previously been in charge of hiring someone, it’s your “beauty blunders,” like split ends and botched tans, that are costing you work. And not, you know, the fact that women are unfairly expected to be bastians of perfect grooming. More »

Badvertising: Stop Making Me Feel Insecure About My Armpits

Badvertising: Stop Making Me Feel Insecure About My Armpits

I recently saw a blog promoting a product called Dove® Clear Toneâ„¢, which promises to renew and even out the skin under your arms. Unfortunately for Dove and the people trying to promote it, I am a busy, active 20-something with a brain and a life and a job, and thus, I have too much on my plate to feel even the slightest bit insecure about the appearance of my armpits. But companies and advertisers do this all the time–they bank on insecurities about areas of the body that we, as female-identified humans, would otherwise never worry about to sell you stuff you really don’t need. Why Vaseline Is Bad For You, And What You Should Use Instead

Why Vaseline Is Bad For You, And What You Should Use Instead

Vaseline is the panacea of winter skin problems, but lately rumor has it that petroleum jelly is bad. But why? I know some of it has to do with the environment: Petroleum comes from the same place as gasoline, so it’s not exactly “green” beauty. But it’s not just the eco-friendly who shun petroleum; there’s also concern for the bad things it can do to your skin and body. Just don’t ask anyone why—it’s surprisingly tough to find out what’s so bad about petroleum jelly. So I asked around and found some straightforward answers, as well as some ways to make sure your winter skin isn’t left in the lurch. More »

My No-Shampoo Experiment Is Over…And I Still Don’t Want To Use Shampoo

My No-Shampoo Experiment Is Over...And I Still Don't Want To Use Shampoo

50 days ago, I briefly joined the no-shampoo movement as an experiment. And while I received some dirty looks when I told my friends and family, it was a shockingly clean and grease-free period, which was predetermined to end in the New Year. And so, yesterday I revisited the soapy stuff and, I won’t lie, there were a few things I missed about lathering up–but I don’t think I’ll be making a habit of it. Shampoo and I haven’t broken up completely, but we’re definitely moving toward a “just friends” relationship. More »

Stop Buying Eco-Friendly Products That Make You Go “Meh” — Try Birchbox Instead

Stop Buying Eco-Friendly Products That Make You Go "Meh" -- Try Birchbox Instead

To some, eco-friendly beauty means a box of baking soda and a bottle of apple cider vinegar. To others, it means finding a few products that work (ideally without toxins or environmentally unfriendly chemicals) because putting half-used bottles of face cream and body oil in a landfill isn’t very eco-friendly. But finding stuff you like without a few unused casualties is tough, which is why you should check out Birchbox.com, a membership service that curates a monthly collection of luxe beauty samples that are shipped directly to your door for only $10 a month. Real Women Respond: How Do You Keep Your Face Clean?

Real Women Respond: How Do You Keep Your Face Clean?

I’m a little bit all over the place when it comes to soaps and facial cleansers. My all time favorite face soap is Burt’s Bees Orange Essence Facial Cleanser, which leaves my skin tingly and glowing and is one of the few cleansers I’ve ever been able to distinguish from all the rest. But I get distracted by pretty things—the ‘dirty hippie’ oatmeal soap my friend makes, goats milk and lavender soap from the farmer’s market, bar soaps from Dr. Bronner’s (whom I swear by to keep my house clean), shea butter soap from Dr. Woods, or even, occasionally, fancy pricey soaps which promise things like ‘increased luminosity’ and ‘faster cell turnover.’ I also really like Thayers witch hazel astringents and toners. To see how my skin-cleansing habits compared with those of my peers, I took to Facebook and Twitter (and so did the Blisstree social media team). Here’s what other women had to say. More »
