Blisstree Beauty Tips: Can Argan Oil Replace Frizz-Ease, Jergens and MAC?

These days, argan oil is as ubiquitous in beauty aisles as Charlie Sheen is on the internet. It’s used in a wide variety of beauty products; we’ve seen it in everything from shampoo to skin care and even in makeup. What’s so good about argan oil that beauty brands are finding ways to include it — and market it — in dozens of products? More »

Only Heidi Klum Could Say the Secret to Aging Well Is Getting Fat

Only Heidi Klum Could Say the Secret to Aging Well Is Getting Fat

We can accept that some women hit the genetic jackpot (which happens to earn them more money than we could ever hope to win in a real lottery), but when those women start giving us advice about beauty and aging, we kind of want them to shut up. One such woman, Heidi Klum, is on the cover of Self‘s December issue, and shared just the kind of advice we’re talking about in an interview with the mag: “The ultimate beauty secret for a woman getting older is, Don’t be too thin! It is always better to have a little meat on your bones. When you are just muscle, you end up being gaunt in the face, and that makes you look older by five or 10 years.” More »

The Dirty Dozen, Beauty Edition: Chemicals to Ban From Your Cosmetics

The Dirty Dozen, Beauty Edition: Chemicals to Ban From Your Cosmetics

Sometimes, it’s hard to be a consumer. Giving all your love to just the right kind of products isn’t simple or cheap, so we rely hard on lists like “the dirty dozen” to make us smarter shoppers. We’re thrilled to find a dirty dozen list for our cosmetics; when it comes to shampoo and eyeshadow, it’s hard to remember which chemicals we should care about (or even how to pronounce them). The David Suzuki foundation, a charitable Canadian group dedicated to environmental conservation and education, finally made a list to help us decipher what we should toss out of our medicine cabinets. Women: Do We Always Cut Our Hair Short as We Age?

Women: Do We Always Cut Our Hair Short as We Age?

On Monday, our friends over at Lemondrop published a post about how lots of women tend to chop off their locks as they age — into a bob or shorter. Reasons for this possible trend are numerous and even conflicting: Pure laziness, or on the flip side, not having enough time to devote to hair maintenance. Feeling less secure of one’s self, or conversely, more secure of one’s self. There’s the idea that keeping one’s hair long into middle age is some sort of rebellious act to be avoided. And then there’s the shocking suggestion that cutting off your hair means that you’re no longer interested in sex. Or maybe short hair is just more ladylike?

Here’s who comes to mind when I think of women with short hair: Jamie Lee Curtis, my mom, Angela Lansbury, Doris Day, Doris Roberts, Bonnie Franklin, Sharon Stone, Victoria Beckham, Samantha Brown of The Travel Channel, and lately, me. More »

Eco-Friendly, Natural and Organic Leave-In Conditioner

Eco-Friendly, Natural and Organic Leave-In Conditioner

The phrase “leave-in conditioner” strikes fear in my heart. My hair gets greasy very quickly, so any conditioner that sits on my head all day usually just speeds up the process. Still, I gave Blow’s Light Headed leave-in conditioner (bonus points for clever name) a chance.

Maybe I’ve applied other leave-in conditioners too generously, or maybe Blow is just lighter and less greasy than most other products on the market, but it didn’t make my hair look greasy at all. I sprayed some in after my morning shower, and then just went to work with my hair wet. Later in the day, after my hair had dried, it looked shiny and showed considerably fewer fly-aways than normal. How to Get Long Lashes — Without Faking It

How to Get Long Lashes — Without Faking It

Check out this post from Cat Marnell on Lemondrop.

“Lash brands are stepping up their proverbial ‘lash games,’ so batting averages are higher than ever!”

That was a goofy, terrible sentence I once wrote for a magazine article years ago at the beginning of my career. It didn’t get published, probably because it sucked, and thank God.
Luckily, I did (and still do) know mascara better than I know myself. That’s because I make actual experts tell me everything, so I can parrot the very latest in lash-lengthening news back to you. More »

Go Bright: The Best Teeth Whiteners

Go Bright: The Best Teeth Whiteners

Check out this post from Cat Marnell at Lemondrop.

Continuing the Lemondrop bad-teeth debate: If you ever want to feel really depressed, go visit a celebrity dentist! I found this out the hard way a couple years ago when, as a magazine editor, I visited the famous Dr. Fang, DDS, renowned for his glamorous celebrity clients, glossy veneers, and E!-network-worthy fake tan.

His tony uptown Manhattan office was extra-sexy, with sleek white leather furniture like a Palm Springs porno set and random Playboy magazines scattered amidst the Ws and Allures. The message? This was not a dentist’s office for your dumb kids and their lame cavities, OK? Hygiene = out! Looking sexy = in, and if you forgot it, the weird framed photos of Karolina Kurkova looking gape-mouthed everywhere would certainly remind you. More »

Long, Healthy Hair Can Be Yours: Find Out How From an Expert

Long, Healthy Hair Can Be Yours: Find Out How From an Expert

Want thick, healthy hair? Of course you do. Read Cat Marnell’s Lemondrop <post about how to get the hair of your dreams.

I’ve been obsessed with Long Hair Community — the vaguely creepy site for people who like to take photos of themselves sitting on their long, long hair, then post them on the Internet to brag about it — for years.

Just read the message boards with posts titled things like “I FINALLY HAVE MY FAIRY-TALE HAIR!”. It’s addicting. They’ve got a lot to teach me about growing my hair to levels of Rapunzel-worthy epic-ness, and I can’t get enough. More »
