]]> Are you looking for a new sewing project to benefit charities?

I think that Goods 4 Girls is a fantastic project to participate in!  Goods 4 Girls was created to help young women in Africa who don’t have regular access to sanitary menstrual products.  It can drastically affect their lives – it can mean the difference between attending school one week out of the month or helping their family farm.

Goods 4 Girls is asking people to make fabric sanitary napkins (patterns are available for free online) and donate them.  The napkins will be shipped to young women in need in Africa.

]]> Nola Cooper’s ‘The Classic Life Magazine’ has an article titled Why “Decorating Your Space”.  She discusses decorating your space whether large or small.  Her example is decorating her small powder room.  Here’s an idea – if you have a space to decorate, consider using an original needlework piece that you made as the focal point.  Choose the color scheme to highlight the colors in your piece.  What a better way to make your house your home?

A Cool Gift to Sew

]]> Liz Smith, in Bebestages, writes about a very cool item that wouldn’t be hard to make as a gift for a new mom or an expectant mom.

It is a snack pack for the stroller or shopping cart. As Liz says, it’s “excellent for new little hands that can’t yet hold little snack cups or who like to throw anything they’re given.”

]]> This week I am highlighting the blog of katherine kerr of the Hermitage. I have in the past been a member of the SCA, and find all of her pages on her site both informative and enjoyable. For needleworkers in general, you may prefer the pages on garb and embroidery.

I decided to feature Vicki’s site this week because Hsien-Hsien Lei of Genetics and Health interviewed me this week, so have had Genetics and DNA on the brain… and in Katherine’s embroidery page she talks about incorporating scientific images into medieval needlework.

As a dedicated anachronist I had been toying for some time with the idea of incorporating a set of modern scientific images in period embroidery styles, such as the DNA double helix or nuclear decay spirals. Close examination of a range of period examples convinced me that it would be possible to incorporate these motifs in a period-looking fashion.

For more on her methodology and research into this, as well as a good image of the piece of needlework she created incorporating the motifs, head on over and browse. Not only is there this fun piece with the DNA sneakily included, but she also has examples of embroideries, cross stitch and blackwork. Her garb section includes an example of a gorgeous embroidered sleeve insert.
