Blog Action Day 2009: Climate Change

Blog Action Day was founded by Collis Ta’eed in the summer of 2007. Along with the support of his wife, brother, father, and team at Envato in Australia, he managed to recruit 20,000 bloggers to all write on the same topic on the same day, October 15, 2007. The topic that first year was the environment and it was a huge fun event. In 2008 the topic was poverty and even more bloggers came out to participate. The third annual Blog Action Day is coming up, and there’s still plenty of time for you to jump on board.

This year’s topic: Climate Change

The point: Blog Action Day is an effort to get everyone in social media talking about one important issue on one day. No matter your blog’s topic, you can participate. This is not just for green bloggers. Got a cooking blog? How can you slant that to climate change. Got a parenting blog? How is climate change is affecting your kids? Hate climate change? Well, go ahead and blog it.

When bloggers join together to focus on one topic, on the same day, it encourages readers around the world to also give their attention to the issue. It’s seriously amazing to see everyone in the blogosphere join together for one day. It’s always fun and meaningful.

Who can participate: Everyone around the world is free to join in on Blog Action Day. Small blogs, huge blogs, new and old bloggers, everyone. There’s no limit on the number of posts, type of post, or your opinions.

How to participate: Head over to the Blog Action Day site and register your blog, or blogs. I usually have about four or five of my blogs participating, and this year Blisstree Green Living is on board too. So far 412 blogs are on board – are you?

Theme Weeks for Summer Vacation

Last year, at the b5 One Book Two Book blog, I developed Theme Weeks, concentrating on a different topic with related books, web resources, and activities each week of the summer after school was out. I plan to do it again this year in my Parenting topics.

I shall announce the themes as soon as I get them planned, starting in mid-June, when school is out in my area (New Hampshire) and I’m not substitute teaching any longer.

If you have interesting, enjoyable, and informative activities you do in those areas, I’d like to have you share them with me and our readers.

Theme Weeks for Summer Vacation

A Web Site or Blog for your Crafting

Nowadays, most crafters have a web site, or at least a blog, for their hobby or business. It’s really almost essential that you develop a blog if you’re expanding your hobby into a business.

Some craftspeople start out with a blog, as my daughter has at Meandering Threads and then may develop a web site where they offer items for sale. Perhaps you simply enjoy sharing your crafting heritage, as I do at Tales of the Trails End Quilters. Here I relate stories about the quilters in my family.

Blogging gives crafters a place where others can view your work (especially if you use photos) and get to know you. It opens the door to happenings in the crafting world…or quilting world in my daughter’s case.

Your blog/web site, may not be at the top of search engines, at least initially, but you have a place where other crafters and your customers can learn more about you and what you’re doing…whether it’s making and selling items, teaching workshops, designing unique pieces, writing books, producing related items such as note cards, pictures, puzzles, or selling fabric and other supplies.

Why don’t you let me know about your blog or web site and how it has helped and inspired you. Often, blogs simply are fun to maintain and keep us in touch with other artists, crafters, quilters and fabric divas.

For all you b5media fans and readers – b5media will be at Blog World Expo November 7th, 8th and 9th. As a special feature, b5media is going to be hosting some special games during event. The b5media Poker Game! And, if you happen to be a winner at poker, you’ll walk away with some pretty grand prizes such as iphones, wiis, ipods and xbox’s.

Here’s how it’s going to work –

Attendees of BlogWorld Expo can collect b5 chips throughout the conference in several ways:

Answer b5media trivia – $500 chip

Each day, b5 will have an auction in our booth (at 2:30 Thursday and Friday) and attendees can use their chips to bid on the prizes. As noted, we will be doing a secret password. You can find these passwords in various b5media blogs (Psst…see below for the first secret password!). Participants only need to approach someone in the b5media booth with the password and they will get a token.

b5media’s booth number is 309.

So, if you’re going to the Expo – and you’d like to get a $500 chip to start with (so you can bid on our fabulous prizes), the first secret password is: “b5alicious”.

Watch for more secret passwords scattered about b5media. And, don’t forget to let me know if you win any of the b5 prizes – I’d love to hear details since I won’t be able to attend this year.

If you are going, have a safe trip and bring plenty of stories back with you. Not everything that happens in Vegas has to stay in Vegas
