The 50 mile long Panama Canal has three sets of locks, including the Miraflores Locks, pictured here.  The locks connect several man-made lakes and a natural river.  These locks are located nearest the Pacific Ocean are the first set after passing under the Bridge of the Americas.
Ships are assessed a toll for using the locks, based on ship length, the type of ship, as well as the type of cargo onboard.  The average toll is around $55,000, with the highest toll recorded for a cruise ship …read more

A Working Tug on the Petaluma River

This tug was pushing a large barge of clam shells, moving up he Petaluma River to a shell crushing facility.  The shells would eventually be used to make calcium supplements.  The blue flag with the hatching baby chick is the burgee from the Petaluma Yacht Club.

A Junk Floating off Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

This area of northeast Vietnam, just south of China, consists of a grouping of close to 2,000 small jungle islands.  A few of the islands are hollow, allowing tourists to explore the large caves.
It’s one of Vietnam’s most picturesque and popular destinations for tourism.
