When I was anorexic, I made efforts not to look at myself in the mirror, whether I was naked or clothed. Even though I was happy that my weight was plummeting, I still didn’t feel even remotely attractive. In fact, with each passing pound, I reminded myself how far I was away from “perfection”.

Today, I still don’t love to look at myself when I come out of the shower or get dressed. I mean, I know I have to and I don’t freak out about it (too much), but I don’t love it, either.

With such a mixed-up mindset about body shape, type and issues, I was fascinated when I heard about Lifetime’s new show “How to Look Good Naked”. In it, Carson Kressley (formerly of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy”) educates women on how to feel comfortable in their own skins. Heck, he even makes them stand in their underwear (and eventually nude) for the camera. YIKES!

I confess that I’ve only watched one episode — the first — from start to finish. I expected the experience to be syrupy sweet and maudlin, but Kressley seems to play his role nicely. And the gal I followed from beginning to end did seem to learn to love her body in a week’s time.

In a recent review, The New York Times said this about the program, which I find interesting but with which I don’t necessarily agree:

“Mr. Kressley never pretends that there is a woman alive who can learn to love herself without at least a handful of people telling her she looks half-way decent. “How to Look Good Naked” isn’t just fun. It’s honest.”

Has anyone else out there seen the program? If so, what were your feelings about it?

======================================

Want to learn to love YOUR bod? Stop by this post and learn how you can be part of “24 Hours of Body Love” on February 14!

On Valentine’s Day (February 14), I will begin what I am calling “24 Hours of Body Love.”

Each hour beginning at midnight EST, I will post one person’s image and request POSITIVE comments on the things that viewers love about that individual’s appearance. (Comments will be moderated and only optimistic ones will be allowed — no exceptions.)

This is not a game and it’s not a joke. I truly want people to see themselves through the eyes of others… and what better day to do that than the one devoted to all things amore?

My email address is at the right side of this page, and I will respect every volunteer’s anonymity. If I receive more than 24 volunteers, we’ll just continue the love-fest ad infinitum! (Oh, that would be wonderful, wouldn’t it?)

Please, please don’t send me images of your ex-girlfriend or neighbor. Let’s keep this as squeaky clean as possible.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

(And speaking of loving yourself, you haven’t forgotten about the Breaking the Mirror contest, have you? Head over there now and enter to win a signed copy of Nancy Redd’s fabulous new book, BODY DRAMA.)

Making our first Breaking the Mirror contest even more spectacular, author Nancy Redd has agreed to sign the copy of BODY DRAMA that one lucky guy or gal will win!
How cool is that?
I see that the comments at the challenge have died down a bit… let’s get ‘em going again. After all, it’s not as much fun without some healthy competition! And besides — it’s great to hear what you love about yourselves!
