Shelly has published one of the most detailed and complete tutorials that I’ve ever seen on chain stitch binding. I’m not sure if this would be considered a Coptic binding style or not (I think it is), but Shelly has photographed and stepped through each stage so clearly that I’m totally convinced that I can do this!

While you’re there, you also need to visit Shelly’s gallery, where you will spend some happy time drooling over her collages, altered books, doodles, and artist trading cards. This is a mixed media artist with wide and varied skills!

What’s Up Wednesday!

The Miniature Book Society once more is sponsoring a competition and exhibition. Read all the rules carefully; there is an entry fee. Deadline: April 1, 2009.

RULES FOR ENTRIES: To qualify for an award the books and the slipcases or portfolio boxes must measure no more than three inches in any dimension; a maximum of two entries per press and/or person; must have been published and bound in a multiple edition (of like copies); have been published within the past two years (2007– 2009).

This year, for the first time, we will accept one-off “artists’ books, or one-off bindings. They won’t qualify for a Distinguished Book Award, but they will be included in the exhibition and they will be included in the catalog, in a separate section. This is a new opportunity for our creative members who don’t make multiples to show their work. If your entry includes a slipcase or portfolio box that exceeds this size limitation the slipcase or portfolio box will not be shown to the jury members.

Check out this cute video tutorial! Judy teaches us how to make a very simple style of journal, using two 4×6 inch photos as the covers. I’m sure you could substitute other sizes of photos if you’d like. This is a real quick and easy gift idea, and also a great way to use some of the photos you take on vacations this spring and summer, thanks to Photojojo!
