However, as with many drugs, Tamoxifen has some side effects and dangers also.

Side effects such as strokes, blood clots and even sometimes, cataracts, has already been documented. A new study says that patients who took Tamoxifen “more than quadrupled their chances of coming down with a rare and deadlier type of breast cancer.” Apparently, the drug works because it helps prevent cancer cells from binding to estrogen in the body. The rare kind of cancer is one in which the cells don’t bind to estrogen.

More studies will obviously be needed. Despite this news, Tamoxifen may just be the right drug for patients. Women are advised to talk to the doctors about the risks and benefits of Tamoxifen.

In a comprehensive review of breast cancer research published today, 56 of the UK’s most influential breast cancer experts have identified the key research gaps and priorities for the greatest potential impact on patients.

Breast cancer treatment has improved over the past few decades and led to increased survival rates and better quality of life, the report highlights. However over 44,000 women in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer each year and around 12,500 will die.

Unfortunately, not enough is known about why treatments don’t work for some patients or why breast cancer can return, sometimes many years later, says Breast Cancer Campaign.

What do you think? Is there is a significant, strong statistical basis to the above conclusions?
