Grow flowering plants: Butterflies like flowers more than plain old leafy plants or veggies. Even if you want a garden for food, make sure to plant some colorful flowers for your fluttery friends. Good flowers for attracting butterflies include butterfly bush (go figure), salvia, zinnias, aster, black-eyed susan, and more. See a big list of flowers that butterflies like. Note that the University of Kentucky says that, “Groups of the same plants will be easier for butterflies to see than singly planted flowers.”

Create a sunny spot: Butterflies like to sun themselves and it’s a snap to make a small watering oasis for them near the flowers you planted (see above).

Simply dig a small hole (about 1 inch deep) and fill it with sand.

Place flat stepping-like stones around the hole (light colored so they don’t get too hot).

If you live in a rainy area you don’t need to do anything with your little oasis. If you have dry spells, pour a little water into the sand – keep the water level just below the sand’s surface. This allows your friends to take a drink.

Do you get butterfly visitors in your garden? I don’t, maybe because my patio garden is up high, but I do get hummingbirds which are fun too.

I took a walk with the little guy down to the park this afternoon. We saw several beautiful black butterflies fluttering about in the trees and near where we played. Butterflies are always inspiring to me. So, here’s a visual journal prompt for you.
Create a butterfly in your journal. Either paint, draw, copy & colour, or collage your butterfly. Make it fill the page. Allot a good 30 minutes to one hour for this project. Use colours that mean something to you. Immerse yourself in the process and think of nothing but your creation. Use colours that mean something to you. Immerse yourself in the process and think of nothing but your creation.
