Stampington & Co, publishers of Somerset Studio and Belle Armoire magazines among others, is accepting entries for an annual special publication called Somerset Digital Studio. The deadline is October15, so fire up your computer and get going! Here’s all the important information.

Digital artwork is HOT right now and we’re super excited about the premier of a new publication that will feature all digital designs. Somerset Digital Studio will focus on all things digital — scrapbook pages, ATCs, collages, cards, invitations, calendars, clothing, heritage pieces — anything that is unique, distinctive, artistic and created digitally. In order to be considered for publication in Somerset Digital Studio, please send via e-mail the following for each submission: a high-res image (300 dpi, at least 6 x 6 inches), a brief paragraph describing the artwork (who’s who in any photos or why you were inspired to create it), instructions on how you created your digital artwork including the specifics as to what tools, programs, etc. you used. Please include your name, e-mail and mailing address with every submission. E-mailed submissions should be directed to the managing editor, Jana Holstein, at somersetdigital@stampington.com. Please put “Somerset Digital Studio” in the subject line.

Finding creative uses for old items is nothing new to artists, but the spirit of preserving the planet is more important than ever before and GreenCraft Magazine is here to honor and inspire those who find artistic uses for normally discarded resources. You already know that one of our mottoes here is “Don’t throw ANYthing out!” So look around you and see what you’ve got to work with

GreenCraft Magazine will provide ideas for repurposing trash to treasure by showcasing projects where waste is repurposed into ecologically chic creations.

To be considered for publication in this semi-annual magazine, please submit your recycled, reused and repurposed items to GreenCraft Magazine no later than September 15, 2009.

To jump start your creativity, you might want to look through some of these sites. But please, use them for inspiration only…these ideas have already been done!

Art Doll Quarterly invites you to send in a submission for the next issue. The special theme for the next quarterly issue: Upcycled Dolls.

Do you have worn-out clothes, old ties or pants that are too short? Maybe a favorite piece of clothing that you can’t wear anymore but just can’t bear to get rid of? Upcycle them into a brand new wonderful art doll. The editors can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with!

The autumn quarterly issue of Altered Couture is on the horizon, and I thought that looking at Nancy Judd’s amazing recycled wonders a couple weeks ago might be just the inspirational push you need to get you going this time. You’ve got two months before the deadline, but don’t procrastinate…you know how time can sneak up on you!

A hand-me-down sweater … a raggedy old skirt from the thrift store … a plain T-shirt … Using just a few tools coupled with your creativity, all of these items can be transformed into fantastic works of wearable art! The publisher of Belle Armoire and Somerset Studio invites you to submit your own altered and embellished clothing and accessories to be considered for this exciting publication. Big hats, little hats, fancy hats, plain hats (this is starting to remind me of a Dr Suess story…), all hats are welcome as entries in the juried exhibition sponsored by TLD Design Center and Gallery. Hats 2009 is open to all artists and designers doing original work. Only hats of your own design and individual effort are eligible. All entries must be wearable.

High quality photos or slides which are tightly focused must be submitted by July15, 2009 with a non-refundable entry fee of $3.00 per hat entry. Up to 5 entries per person.

Life Images is now going to be an annual photography publication by Stampington & Company. The next deadline is August 15, 2009. The issues usually have a special theme or challenge, and this upcoming volume will especially be featuring work done with Polaroid emulsions. Another theme will be photos that illustrate this quote by Henri Matisse: “Color helps to express light, not only the physical phenomenon, but the only light that really exists, that in the artist’s brain.”

Life Images will feature the very best of your most artistic, emotionally moving, or expressive photos along with a few of your words. These photos should be of people, places and things important in your life, whether for a fleeting moment or a lifetime. We are interested in your journal entry that would accompany these photos – whether it be a heartfelt short story, expressive comment, or emotional poem. All original or copies of photographs submitted must be clearly identified with the artist’s name, address, email and phone number on each photo. We also require information on the camera make & model, film or digital, altered or unaltered. If altered, please indicate software and techniques used or materials and technique used for manual alteration (i.e. bleaching, etc.) We also ask that your journal entry be attached. If you prefer, you may send the images, copy and photo information electronically to the managing editor Jennifer Jackson at jjackson@stampington.com.

Special challenge: Puppets
In the Winter issue of Art Doll Quarterly, some beautiful puppet dolls created by talented artist LK Ludwig were presented (“Story Puppets,” page 68). LK’s lovely puppets are whimsical and unique — and totally different from the usual puppets we’re all accustomed to. As doll artists, you have a bounty of ideas and your imagination soars when presented with new challenges, so ADQ invites you to step up to the plate and show what kind of puppet dolls you can create.
