Expressions Fiber Art Gallery seeks U.S. Artists 18+ creating Artist Books, Paper Sculpture, Soft Sculpture (including dolls), and Fiber Art (quilts and stitchery, woven, knitted, knotted or crocheted works including clothing and accessories) for upcoming group and solo shows in 2008. Gallery curator is currently reviewing digital images. All submissions must include title, size, medium, and price of each piece. TERMS: NO FEE. 40% commission.

Call for entries: 500 Enameled Objects

It’s not that easy to do ugly. I mean to do really gut-twisting ugly.

It’s easy to make a necklace that isn’t that great, but how about to make one that breaks all the rules of good design and leaves your viewer feeling squeamish? I can’t show you a picture of my entry from last year here, because I used plastic vomit as the base. If you’d like to see it, it’s on their website as a semi-finalist from 2007. It’s called “Queasy”, and you’ll have to scroll down just a bit. You’ve been warned!

The Land of Odds has been sponsoring this contest for 6 years now, so there are plenty of…wonderful?…examples of ugly art to look at to inspire you. But please, enter this fun contest and see how hard it really is to do ugly! All the information you need is here. The deadline for submissions is March 15, 2008. Call for entries: The 6th Annual Ugly Necklace Contest

The theme for our Quilting Arts Magazine® 2009 Calendar will be “Celebrating Home.” Show us in stitch, fabric, and embellishment how you celebrate home. You can interpret the theme many ways: as a celebration of the concept of home or what makes a house a home, celebrations at home, honoring the architecture of a residence, moving into the home or community of your dreams, or whatever the theme means to you. The artists who create the 13 winning submissions (one for the cover and 12 for the months) will each receive a $200 gift certificate to our online store.

How it Works
Create up to two original, not previously published, 12″ x 12″ square, embellished art quilts based on the theme of “Celebrating Home.” The quilt(s) must be backed and bound (anything from a traditional binding to a zigzagged or satin-stitched edge is fine, but the edges must be closed). The quilt(s) should also include a sleeve for hanging, as the winning quilts will be displayed at various quilt and textile shows with Quilting Arts Magazine.

Submit three 8″ x 10″ photos of each submission, one of the full quilt and two detail shots. To give your submission the best chance of being accurately evaluated, please make sure the photographs are well-lit, clear, and are printed on photo-quality paper (not copy paper). Please label each photo with your first and last names, address, phone number, and email address.

Along with your photos, please include a brief narrative explaining your interpretation of our theme, “Celebrating Home,” as well as the methods and materials used in your quilt(s).

Deadline for entry: Friday, March 7, 2008. Please note that this is a receive-by date. Your photos and descriptions must be in our office no later than March 7th.

Call for entries: Quilting Arts 2009 Calendar contest

1. Make a mixed-media paper quilt that incorporates a color or colors that reveal the true you.
2. The entire quilt, including binding, must measure 12″ x 12″.
3. You are encouraged, but not required, to use a sewing machine for quilting your paper quilt.
4. Any embellishments must not protrude more than 1″ from the quilt.
5. The entire quilt must weigh no more than 2 lbs.
6. The quilt must be backed with fabric and the edges must be stitched closed, or you may use a fabric binding.
7. The quilt must have a 3″ rod pocket attached to the back.
8. To be considered for the Make it University! display, send 2 jpegs of your paper quilt, one of the entire piece and one detail, to bdelaney@interweave.com no later than March 3, 2008. You will be notified if your quilt has been accepted by March 7, 2008.
9. If accepted, your quilt must be in our offices no later than March 26, 2008.
