Are you still using corn oil? You might want to switch to canola, according to a recent study on the effects of these oils on breast cancer risks.
In this study, researchers fed one group of mice a diet containing corn oil and another group a diet containing canola oil, then recorded the incidence of breast cancer and changes to breast cancer regulating genes in the offspring. All offspring were fed a diet containing corn oil after weaning.

I received an email from a reader about Dow AgroSciences’ canola and sunflower Omega-9 Oils. I know there’s a lot of controversy enveloping canola oils, but the FDA has authorized canola oil bottlers to indicate health claims on their labels pertaining to canola oil’s role in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. A new study published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology indicates that consuming the right type of oils is crucial if you want to boost your brain health.
The study found people who regularly consumed omega-3 rich oils, such as canola oil, flaxseed oil and walnut oil, reduced their risk of dementia by 60 percent compared to people who did not regularly consume such oils. People who ate fruits and vegetables daily also reduced their risk of dementia by 30 percent compared to those who didn’t regularly eat fruits and vegetables.

I know that canola oil (aka rapeseed oil) has been receiving a lot of flak in the recent years. According to researchers at the University of Illinois and Pennsylvania State University, however, using canola oil instead of other vegetable oil may actually help meet dietary recommendations for fatty acid and cholesterol consumption and thus help lower people’s risk of heart disease.
