Are you still using corn oil? You might want to switch to canola, according to a recent study on the effects of these oils on breast cancer risks.

In this study, researchers fed one group of mice a diet containing corn oil and another group a diet containing canola oil, then recorded the incidence of breast cancer and changes to breast cancer regulating genes in the offspring. All offspring were fed a diet containing corn oil after weaning.

While both groups of offspring were about the same weight, the total tumor weight, number of glands with tumors and fraction of mice with tumors were higher in those whose mothers who were fed corn oil.

Apparently, this is due to the higher omega-3/omega 6 ratio of canola oil in comparison to corn oil. Omega 3 has been linked to lower cancer risks, while omega 6 polyunsaturated fats, which are high in corn oils, have previously been linked to increased rates of breast cancer.

Me? I’m still sticking to my rice bran oil.

I received an email from a reader about Dow AgroSciences’ canola and sunflower Omega-9 Oils. I know there’s a lot of controversy enveloping canola oils, but the FDA has authorized canola oil bottlers to indicate health claims on their labels pertaining to canola oil’s role in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. And according to Dow Agro’s website: Omega-9 Oils are healthier because they have zero trans fat and have the lowest amount of saturated fats among oils”, and is thus an ideal choice particularly for restaurants.

Well, I certainly wish restaurants would shift to using healthier oils, but remember, we, the consumers still bear the final responsibility on what we eat. Just because your french fries and burgers were prepared using zero transfat oil doesn’t make it a healthy meal. Perhaps, a bit healthier than they would have been otherwise, ok, but don’t get fooled into believing you can make it a regular fare.

Personally, I still prefer rice bran oil for home use, though.

A new study published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology indicates that consuming the right type of oils is crucial if you want to boost your brain health.
The study found people who regularly consumed omega-3 rich oils, such as canola oil, flaxseed oil and walnut oil, reduced their risk of dementia by 60 percent compared to people who did not regularly consume such oils. People who ate fruits and vegetables daily also reduced their risk of dementia by 30 percent compared to those who didn’t regularly eat fruits and vegetables.

The study also found people who ate fish at least once a week had a 35-percent lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease and 40-percent lower risk of dementia, but only if they did not carry the gene that increases the risk of Alzheimer’s, called apolipoprotein E4, or ApoE4.

In contrast, consuming omega-6 rich oils could increase chances of developing memory problems. Although the effects of dietary habits on memory and Alzheimer risks are clear, it is not yet known precisely how these compounds exert their effects.

I know that canola oil (aka rapeseed oil) has been receiving a lot of flak in the recent years. According to researchers at the University of Illinois and Pennsylvania State University, however, using canola oil instead of other vegetable oil may actually help meet dietary recommendations for fatty acid and cholesterol consumption and thus help lower people’s risk of heart disease.
Substituting canola oil and canola-based margarine for vegetable oils and spreads, such as corn, cottonseed and soybean, “increases compliance with dietary recommendations for saturated fatty acid, monounsaturated fatty acid and alpha-linolenic acid.

According to researchers at the University of Illinois and Pennsylvania State University, however, using canola oil instead of other vegetable oil may actually help meet dietary recommendations for fatty acid and cholesterol consumption and thus help lower people’s risk of heart disease.

According to the researchers, switching to canola-based products 100 percent of the time would decrease adults’ saturated fatty acid intake by up to 9.4 percent; increase their intake of monounsaturated fatty acid by 27.6 percent; and increase their alpha-linolenic acid intakes by73 percent. Total consumption of calories, total fat and cholesterol would not change.

In other words, in comparison to other vegetable oil, canola oil is still healthier. As for me, I’m sticking to my rice bran oil.
