Caregiving, Too, Has Its Stages

   We so often hear about the various stages of Alzheimer’s from very mild to an inability to do anything for themselves nor know anyone except in fleeting moments.  However, there are stages for cregivers, too, as they realize that caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s can be overwhelming and can lead to burnout.

Sharing Your Caregiver Thoughts

Most caregivers find encouragement by sharing their feelings and experiences with others having similar challenges.  I found it very helpful, when my mom was developing Alzheimer’s and I seemed overwhelmed by caregiving tasks, to share with my neighbor who was encountering a similar experience with her great aunt.  We shared books, resources, and just day-to-day challenges…and would come away feeling better for our chats.
Not everyone has someone or a group close by to discuss their situation.  Nowadays, there are numerous online resources and discussion groups.
