CatGenie is the only cat box on the market that actually cleans itself completely!
You hook it up to a water source and that’s it — sensors tell when it’s being used, and once the cat is done the basin fills with water and cleans the granules and the waste gets flushed out. It’s also green! See some images and videos of how it works here.

We’re getting ready to move in just a few weeks and have been planning out how we’re going to arrange things at the new house. Though we’ll have a lot more space than we currently have, we’d like to maximize as much of it as we can just the same.
So we’ve been thinking up ways to “hide” the litter boxes. Our laundry room will be big enough for them to go there, and ideally I’d like to make the space pull extra duty.

We’ve looked at cabinets that double as litter boxes but the prices so far have been pretty prohibitive and I don’t think our old kitties would appreciate having to step up so high to get in!

We’ve found a couple of “furniture hacking” ideas that look pretty neat. There are also some that involve a lot more work than we’re ready to undertake!

Where do you put your litter box(es)? Have you come across any neat ideas or furniture that help hide the boxes?

I love the idea of robotic or motorized litter boxes – it’s one of my least favorite chores. We tried a Littermaid years ago and were unimpressed – it was noisy and broke down completely within six months, but not before flinging poop and litter across the room randomly when it “cleaned.”
The litterbox above is called a Litter-Robot and if it looks big it is – it stands at 24-by-22-by-29 inches which would take up an entire corner in my house. If anything would definitely be a conversation starter, though!

The process seems simple enough: A sensor in the step lets the system know when a cat has stepped into the box, and is triggered again when the cat leaves, turning on a seven-minute timer. It then starts rotating, sifting the litter into a pocket while the kitty offerings get deposited into a drawer in the base. It then rolls back over and the litter comes out of the pocket and back to where the cats can use it.

I really love the idea of this – everything stays contained (unlike the Littermaid), there are no outside moving parts. I think the size and the price (approximately $330!) would keep me from giving it some serious consideration, though. Maybe after a few years we’ll find that they’re able to adjust the size and we’ll give it another look.
