Select batches of Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat and Premium Edge Hairball do not contain enough thiamine, which is an essential nutrient for cats. Without it, they could develop thiamine deficiency which causes gastrointestinal or neurological problems. If untreated, this disorder could result in death.

Initial symptoms of thiamine deficiency include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. Later, neurological problems could develop including, bending the neck toward the floor, wobbly walking, circling, falling and seizures.

So far, the recalled food has only been known to have been distributed in the eastern part of the U.S.

Residents in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida are urged to check the labeling on their bags for the following codes: RAF0501A22X, RAF0501A2X, RAH0501A22X, and RAH0501A2X. Affected bags can be returned to the retailer they were purchased from.

Diamond Pet Foods Recalls Cat Food

Uber-celebrity cook and daytime talk show host Rachael Ray has recently announced that she’s planning on launching her own “super premium dog food” called Nutrish. She’s basing it on recipes she uses for her pit bull Isaboo, and proceeds from the sales will go to Rachael’s Rescue, a charity she founded to help abused animals.

The ingredients don’t list onion so that’s a start, right?

Rachael says: “It seemed like not a lot of extra time to donate to something that could potentially raise millions of dollars for championing these little creatures that can’t speak for themselves.” A cat food line is currently in the works.

To be honest, I’m surprised it’s taken this long! Will you check out Nutrish or stick with what you’re currently feeding?

New Food Bowl Poll

My cats are weird. We never gave them people food when they were young so over the years they actually turn their noses up at it. You could lay down a piece of steak or some cheese and they’ll sniff it and walk away. Turbo likes tortilla chips and yogurt, though – he will hunt you down if he even suspects you’ve got yogurt.

Anyway, I made this for them a while back and even though it smelled like a fantastic cat treat they didn’t care for it. Maybe yours will?

Tuna Treats

1/2 c whole wheat flour
1/2 c nonfat powdered milk
1/2 can tuna or 1/2 C chopped chicken (cooked)
1 T vegetable oil or cod liver oil
1 beaten egg
1/4 c water
catnip (optional)

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease or line cookie sheets with parchment paper. In large bowl, mash the tuna (or chicken) into small pieces. Add flour and milk. Mix well.

After all is mixed pour in water and oil. Mix well again. Beat egg in separate dish until dish until egg gets a foamy texture. Add to mix and mix well. The dough mix will be sticky.

Using your fingers shape dough into small bite size balls, about the size of a marble. Put balls on greased or lined cookie sheet. Flatten balls just a bit with your fingers. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove treats from oven wait five minutes and turn treats over so other side will cook. Bake 10 more minutes or until golden brown in color.

Place treats on cookie rack to cool. Cool for 15 minutes. NEVER give treats to your pet right after cooking! Store in air tight container and store in fridge or cool dry place.

You can add the catnip into the recipe or sprinkle on top of treats.
