Here’s a PSA from Jean Smart. I always liked her work on Designing Women, and now she’s using her acting talents to help spread the word about checking your blood sugar.
Jean is the ambassador for Entertainment Industry Foundations Diabetes Aware which reminds people to watch out for the signs of diabetes and take care to control it.
Take a look at the PSA:
What do you think of it? I’m a little disappointed by it. Jean looks a bit tired in this clip and I don’t think it sends a positive message about diabetes. I think …read more

Just had a chance to go through the latest edition of Diabetes Forecast. I love this magazine, which comes with your membership to the American Diabetes Association. They also have great information that I quite frankly don’t seem to get from my doctor. Often I’ll read about something in the magazine and then go talk to him.
This issue of Diabetes Forecast had Randy Jackson on the cover. One thing I liked about his interview was that he talked about being over 350 pounds. He said when you get to that kind …read more

Oh that Peyton Manning… he’s quite the card. Apparently he was horsing around and doing some “ProBowl pranks.” He had poor Jay Cutler surrounded by Nick Mangold and Kris Dielman (in excess of 300 pounds EACH). They picked up Cutler and dumped him in the pool.
Manning saved Cutler’s cell phone, but didn’t realize he had his blood sugar monitor on him. Dielman said, “That was a prank where I thought we were smart enough to get the cellphone out of his pocket. But then, ‘Oops.’ ”
Ooops indeed. Cutler is …read more

Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler has been vocal about getting diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last year, and he’s helping to bring awareness to the cause. He’s teamed up with Eli Lilly & Co. and their “Inspired by Diabetes” campaign to help send Type 1 diabetic children to summer camps.
“Inspired by Diabetes” is a campaign to help bring families together to help raise awareness to the “global burden” of the disease.
Cutler has said, “Diabetes is the toughest opponent I’ve ever faced, but I wasn’t going to let it slow down my career. …read more

I’m always interested in athletes with diabetes, aren’t you? It seems that much more difficult to manage diabetes when you are always pushing your body to the limit.
But many athletes, like Denver Broncos Quarterback Jay Cutler, manage just fine thank you very much. Cutler checks his blood up to six times each game (which generally lasts about three hours.)
He was apparently diagnosed “last spring just before his 25th birthday” and keeps Gatorade on hand to raise his blood sugar if he drops too low. Or if he gets too high, he takes insulin.

Nick Jonas and Bayer Diabetes Care have produced dog tags that feature a lyric from “A Little Bit Longer,” the song Nick wrote about his diabetes. Two versions of the dog tags are available: one for people who would like to support the cause and another specifically for people with diabetes. The dog tag for people with diabetes has the lyric on the front, but also has the word “diabetes” on the back to document their personal fight against the disease.
I think this is a wonderful way to support the cure …read more
