This issue of Diabetes Forecast had Randy Jackson on the cover. One thing I liked about his interview was that he talked about being over 350 pounds. He said when you get to that kind of weight, it isn’t about food anymore. It’s more than that.

That’s very true. People eat for a number of different reasons. They gain weight because of factors like not enough exercise, too many carbs, and stress. In order to truly change your life you have to take a look at these things to determine how to change them for the better.

If you don’t receiveDiabetes Forecast, I encourage you to visit the ADA website to see how you can get your copy.

This is news NO diabetic likes to hear. Larry Miller, who owns the pro basketball team the Utah Jazz, has “had both of his legs amputated 6 inches below the knee.”
Mr. Miller has Type 2 diabetes and has been using a wheelchair even before the surgery. We wish Mr. Miller a speedy recovery. Our thoughts go out to you!

Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler has been vocal about getting diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last year, and he’s helping to bring awareness to the cause. He’s teamed up with Eli Lilly & Co. and their “Inspired by Diabetes” campaign to help send Type 1 diabetic children to summer camps.

I’m always interested in athletes with diabetes, aren’t you? It seems that much more difficult to manage diabetes when you are always pushing your body to the limit.
But many athletes, like Denver Broncos Quarterback Jay Cutler, manage just fine thank you very much. Cutler checks his blood up to six times each game (which generally lasts about three hours.)
He was apparently diagnosed “last spring just before his 25th birthday” and keeps Gatorade on hand to raise his blood sugar if he drops too low. Or if he gets too high, he takes insulin.

I applaud Jay Cutler for reminding us all that diabetes does not have to slow you down. It just means you have to do things a little differently (like check your blood sugar more often.)

Randy Jackson from American Idol has been vocal about having Type 2 diabetes. He’s also actively involved in raising awareness.
Now Randy is helping people get in the “K.N.O.W” about diabetes. “K.N.O.W.” stands for:
Keeping active and maintaining a healthy body weight.
Normalizing your critical health numbers.
Opting for a healthy lifestyle.
Working with a healthcare provider.
Here’s a video with more information from Randy:

Here’s the “Kiss Diabetes Goodbye” message from the ADA:
“During American Diabetes Month this November, help the American Diabetes Association raise $1 million to kiss diabetes goodbye. Fund researchers who are working toward a day without diabetes. Support diabetes education programs in communities across the country. Provide a voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes.”

Have you ever seen Elaine Stritch? She’s absolutely delightful. So much spunk and so full of life.
But like all real people, she’s had her share of challenges. She talks with Diabetes Life about diabetes and alcoholism.

Nick Jonas and Bayer Diabetes Care have produced dog tags that feature a lyric from “A Little Bit Longer,” the song Nick wrote about his diabetes. Two versions of the dog tags are available: one for people who would like to support the cause and another specifically for people with diabetes. The dog tag for people with diabetes has the lyric on the front, but also has the word “diabetes” on the back to document their personal fight against the disease.
