The four-story Columbarium hosts over 5,000 niches to hold personal remains (ashes) of the interred. People often decorate the niches with personal items and memorabilia, photos and writings. Some are serious in design, others, more whimsical.

The Columbarium holds the remains of some of San Francisco’s most prominent people, including Harvey Milk and many of the city’s founding families.

The ornate and four-story neoclassical Columbarium, built in 1898, is one of San Francisco’s only remaining cemeteries. It located at the end of a residential cul-de-sac in the Richmond District.

The building, located just north of Golden Gate Park, was originally part of a 160+ acre Odd Fellows Cemetery, which was since turned into residential housing.

By 1930, the city of San Francisco required the closure of all cemeteries, and removal of all remains, but the Columbarium building was spared, along with the adjoining gardens.

It houses the ashes of close to 5,000 people.

Tomorrow, a look inside the Columbarium.
