Urgent Notice from US Embassy
If you have a registered Power of Attorney (before December 31, 2007) the US Embassy states the you MUST Register with the CNA before February 12, 2008.
From the US Embassy:
On February 8, 2008, Guatemala’s National Council for Adoptions (CNA) announced that adoption cases “entered” in Guatemala before Dec. 31, 2007 must be registered in the offices of the CNA, which are temporarily installed in the Secretary of Social Welfare (Secretaria de Bienestar Social or SBS) of the Presidency, located at 32 Calle 9-34, Zona 11, Colonia Las Charcas, by Tuesday, Feb. 12 (inclusive). The office will be open during …read more
Guatemalan Adoption News
With everything in turmoil around here I have not been able to keep you all updated on Guatemalan adoptions let alone get into the blog. The powers that be are working hard to restore everything so bear with us a while longer as they push and shove their way to the cots for cat naps in between computer work-outs.
Guatemala, on the other hand, is in just as much flux. Today, as pre-adoptive parents sit at home and bite their fingernails (okay, some of us may be down to the cuticles) two CNA BOD members will be sworn in. …read more
The Good Central Authority News
Central Authority has been in flux this week so I have been waiting to post on it until I could figure out what it all meant. Personally, as a writer, I do not like to post information if I do not understand what I am reading (and I am not good at reading between the lines, especially when it comes to politics).
From Guatadopt:
The news for the day:
Five Problems with Central Authority
As of January 28, there are numerous problems with the Central Authority in Guatemala…
1. Central Authority can not begin processing any cases until PGN has verified the information submitted by the lawyers. However, PGN can not send information on cases that have not yet been submitted to PGN.
When Adoptions Go Wrong: Dateline Exclusive
It is NO secret that Guatemalan adoptions have been under scrutiny for years because of alleged illegal practices. What Dateline has supposedly uncovered is unreal; three children kidnapped from the same family and attempted to be sold off into adoption. Two of the children have since been returned to the parents and one, the eldest daughter, is still missing. Dateline will air an exclusive on Guatemalan adoptions tonight (January 20).
Central Authority Members Outed
It has only been days since the new Central Authority Members were sworn in (and new President Colom has taken office) but he has already replaced several members stating neutrality.
For an impressive view on Guatemalan adoption and President Colom’s stance on adoption read this. PLEASE. It is worthy of your time.
Central Authority Sworn In
The Central Authority was sworn in January 11, 2008 in Guatemala. It seems as if Central Authority wants to and has every intention of respecting the Grandfather Clause and will process all 800 or so cases currently in PGN and those 2000 or so cases not in PGN but being processed. Those numbers “seem” to be rough estimates of the amount of cases currently in Guatemala at this time.
Central Authority Announced!
From Guatadopt:
Central Authority Announced!
Today, PGN published information about the new Central Authority.
It is located at
32nd street
9-34 zone 11
Colonia Las Charcas, Guatemala City.
At this time it is not sure what Central Authority will be doing or when it will be enforced but RUMORS are that new adoptions cases (those started after December 31, 2007) will start being processed there in April.
Guatemala Adoption Woes
On Friday Guatemala’s PGN * shut down stating that they would not be accepting any new cases other than those that had been approved. According to Guatadopt.com this is VERY CONFUSING information because it was believed that ALL cases would be GRANDFATHERED in if they were submitted before December 31, thus APPROVED and processed.
What is even more confusing is that the sign on the door to PGN stated that all cases have to be registered with CENTRAL AUTHORITY, a NEW division.
