Christmas day is usually about the kids. They do seem to have the most fun. I know my little boy had a terrific day yesterday. I spent the day serving food, talking and listening to family members talk. It was a fun & relaxing day. For this journal writing challenge spend some time writing in your journal about your Christmas day, but as if you were a child again. How different would your day be with no other responsibilities than to have fun? What would you do that you no longer do that you are a grown up? Write in your journal about the best things Christmas brings to children, from the point of view of yourself as a child.

In keeping with the plot development idea from yesterday for this journal writing challenge imagine the plot is an individual. Write a journal entry from the perspective of the plot. This might seem difficult at first. This journal writing challenge is simply a way to help you hear/see/imagine your story from a different perspective. What is the plot trying to tell you? Let the plot speak freely about what is happening in the story. Try to allow the plot to own the story.

You may want to hold a dialogue with the plot to ask specific questions about the characters and their motivations. Ask the plot if there are characters you need to add, remove or merge with other characters. I hope you enjoy this journal writing challenge.

Today is also Good Friday & a public holiday here in Australia. While reading the Easter story in my bible I came across this passage in Matthew 27:51-53 & couldn’t help wonder about these people who were raised from the dead right at that time. Please read the passage so you know what I mean.

For today’s journal writing challenge imagine you are one of these raised to life at that moment. How do you feel having another chance at life? What would you do with this new life? Would having another chance at life change the decisions you make about what you do each day? I hope you enjoy this journal writing challenge.

Freaky Friday #103

For the last few days I haven’t been able to access my blog due to outages in b5media, so that’s why I’ve been so quiet just lately. But it looks like things are back to normal; at least we’re all hoping so. Without having access I did think about what it might be like if suddenly there was no longer any internet. I got a few good journal entries out of that one and possibly an idea for a short story.

So, the challenge today is to imagine that suddenly there is no longer an internet. Wild, I know, but just stop and think of all the things you could no longer do if for some reason the internet did not exist. Modern life would take a very different turn. Spend some time writing in your journal about how this would change your job, your daily life and communication for you with loved ones. Or would nothing much change at all for you?

Freaky Friday #97

While researching online today I came across the Art in Every Day blog by Cheryl Finley. In Cheryl’s Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! entry there’s an inspiring declaration “I am the New Year.” For today’s Freaky Friday journal writing challenge write from this same perspective. You may want to write as the example, or anyway the prompt takes you. If you feel we’ve spent too much of the year already, one month down, then write from the perspective of “I am February.”

Freaky Friday #96

I’ve recently finished reading the excellent book Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. In the novel the main character relates the story of how he joined the circus from the perspective of his old age. This reminds me of Freaky Friday #64 where I encouraged you to write about running away to join the circus. This time write your journal entry from the same perspective; that of your old age. Look back over your life in the circus and share how it all worked out for you.

Freaky Friday #95

Today is Friday. That means it’s Freaky Friday. If you need to know more about this journal writing challenge please read the First Freaky Friday entry.

While out shopping today I saw two teenage girls snickering, giggling and pointing their fingers at someone. The first thing I thought of was the film Mean Girls starring Lindsay Lohan. I had my share of run-ins with mean girls myself as a teen. How about you?

Today spend some time writing about yourself from the perspective of a mean girl. Try to recall an incident from memory and write from the mean girl’s point of view. Once you’ve done that, reread the entry. Was there anything valid in the criticisms? You might like to come back to the entry in a couple of days so you can have a cooler eye & emotion. Make sure to write another entry after rereading the mean girl one, though. If there was anything true about the things she had to say, write a response detailing what you intend to do about it. Remember; be gentle with yourself. The idea of this journal writing challenge is to view your life from a different perspective.

Freaky Friday #94

The other night I watched the film Children of Men, starring Clive Owen & Julianne Moore. Really, I am still processing the story, even though it was simple enough. But the idea of the entire human race being infertile for over 18 years is a frightening thought. That’s a long time. The film showed how this impacted the world of the future. The youngest people in the world are treated as celebrities and there is a sense of despair over everything.

For this journal writing challenge put yourself in this situation. The story is set in the future. Find a synopsis of the film on the Children of Men website. If you have children write about how life is now you will no longer have any more and the possibility of them not creating future generations. If you haven’t had children write about how this would be on into the future with everyone else in the same boat as you.

As I read the credits I noticed the film was based on a novel by PD James of the same name: The Children of Men.

Freaky Friday #93

I’ve been thinking of the number of books & movies where the fish out of water theme is used. Stories with this premise often make the most of bringing out the truth of a character. The idea is simple enough. A character is somehow thrown out of his/her normal situation and must cope with this change. In the film series Back to the Future Marty, played by Michael J Fox, is the fish & time is the water he is out of. Make a list of the books & films you know where this idea is central to the plot. Choose a personal favourite, or one you think is particularly challenging, and write about yourself in a similar situation. How do you cope? Are you able to find inner strength in dealing with this new environment? Do you learn to breathe out of the water? Put yourself into a situation you know is very different from your real life comfort zone. This journal writing challenge will take some thinking. I hope you enjoy seeing your life from a different perspective.

My daughter passed along this story which appears online in many places. It took me just a little while to track down where it originated, but I’m giving Josh Harris full credit for The Room. The link is not to Josh’s site, but the first I found that gave his name as author.
