Villanueva Traded To The Bucks

]]> Inaugural Bald Man of the Week, Charlie Villanueva, was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks last week. Villanueva, who suffers from alopecia areata and is a spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, will be entering his second season in the NBA. His successful rookie season was marked by an appearance in the All-Star Weekend, Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month honors in December and a spot on the All-NBA Rookie First Team.

Charlie Villanueva Getting Well Deserved Praise

]]> Previous Bald Man of the Week, Charlie Villanueva is still garnering some well deserved media attention. This article from The New York Times highlights a professional athlete who hasn’t let is all go to his head. From the article:

Thirteen-year-old Andrew McGarey came back beaming from Madison Square Garden last month and told his parents not to wash the T-shirt Charlie Villanueva had signed for him.

In Milwaukee last Sunday, 11-year-old Rafi Wasserman spoke with Villanueva, catching up as if they were old friends, before the Raptors’ game against the Bucks. Villanueva, Toronto’s rookie forward, then went out and scored a career-high 48 points.

Villanueva Receives Community Assist Award for February

]]> More accolades for this week’s Bald Man of the Week. From NBA.com:

In recognition of Charlie Villanueva’s outstanding efforts in the community, and for his on-going philanthropic work, the NBA announced today it will honor the Toronto Raptors forward with the Community Assist Award for the month of February.

Villanueva has embraced his condition and acts as a role model for many people, accepting and embracing his differences and encouraging others to do the same. He was named the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) spokesperson in July 2005 and has been working with the organization since early 2004. As part of his work with NAAF, he has reached out to as many children affected by Alopecia Areata as he can. (link)

Bald Man of the Week: Charlie Villaneuva

]]> Let’s continue with basketball, but switch to the pros. The Baldiness Bald Man of the Week is Charlie Villaneuva.

Charlie Villaneuva

Charlie is rookie forward for the NBA Toronto Raptors and has been living with alopecia areata since childhood and works with the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. Here’s a great little write up in the Toronto Star:

What the 21-year-old Villanueva has done is become a walking poster boy for the fight against alopecia areata, a disease many suffer from but few know about. He spends an inordinate amount of time delivering his message to kids who suffer from the disease, making sure they know they have someone to look up to, someone who overcame the psychological impact the disease can have to gain respect and fame. I’m not much of an NBA fan, but here’s hoping Charlie has a long and successful career. Hats off! to this week’s Bald Man of the Week
