All this month, we’re going to be talking about breast cancer. We’re talking about the health side of it–like symptoms and treatments–as well as the human side, like how to talk to someone who’s been diagnosed. But a new study published in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment highlights another huge part of the conversation: Causes, or potential causes. According to the study a kind of chemical banned in 1977 may still be increasing our risk of breast cancer. More
Fresh on the heels of a lawsuit, Johnson & Johnson announced yesterday that they’d be removing potentially harmful chemicals from all of their beauty and personal care products. To be axed? Formaldehyde, phthalates, and parabens–all of which have been linked to cancer, but aren’t considered dangerous enough to be banned by the FDA. Which is a huge step toward making products that we all rub on our faces and heads safer and less toxic…but is also a reminder that a lot of products (including the Johnson & Johnson ones in your shower right now) still have all that crap in them. Here’s another good reason to ditch plastic (and chemical-filled cosmetics): Phthalates, which are common plasticizers found in shampoo, nail polish, moisturizers, kids’ toys, and even sex toys, may lead to an increased risk of diabetes, according to one small study out yesterday. But this isn’t the first study to make the connection between the phthalates in cosmetics and household items and diabetes. More

The McRib should really be called the McFib. It’s a lie letting anyone think that the barbecue “pork” sandwich is really ribs when it’s nothing more than pig intestines, hearts and scalded stomachs (we’ve shown you before how disgusting the so-called meat really is), and now we’ve found out it’s even worse. Some of the ingredients are the same chemicals found in–yikes!–yoga mats and the soles of your shoes. More
Over 2 dozen states are working toward, or have already passed, laws limiting the amount of bisphenol A, a toxic chemical found in hard, durable plastic items like baby bottles, water bottles, and kids toys. But what about toys for grown-ups? So far, there has been very little government-sponsored research into the contents of the plastic in sex toys and devices, despite their intimate, contact-heavy nature. But luckily, the adult entertainment and toy industry doesn’t need the government regulating what they make and sell: they’ve already got your back. More
Cool Whip may be a quick topping for strawberry shortcake, but it’s a far cry from real whipped cream. There’s nothing natural about this sweet, white topping—in fact, it’s loaded with chemicals. And according to Organic Authority, there are only two out of the 12 ingredients in Cool Whip that aren’t toxic to us—and water is one of them. More
