Farmer Brown Shears His Sheep (A Yarn About Wool) is written by Teri Sloat and illustrated by Nadine Bernard Westcott. My 3-year old daughter loves sheep, so it’s not surprising she picks this book out at the library every week! However, there is more to appeal to kids about this book than just sheep.
First there are the colorful illustrations, which hold even the smallest children’s attention. Next, there is the incredible rhyming text that reads like a song that is sure to get kids and parents hooked on this story.

First there are the colorful illustrations, which hold even the smallest children’s attention. Next, there is the incredible rhyming text that reads like a song that is sure to get kids and parents hooked on this story.

The book tells the story of Farmer Brown and his sheep. It’s shearing time, so Farmer Brown does his work and, “clip, clip, buzz, buzz; he took their wool and left them fuzz.” The sheep are not happy (and are left quite cold) as they follow Farmer Brown taking the wool to get it carded, spun dyed, etc. At each stop, the sheep cry, “Baa, we want it back!” Until finally, the sheep seize the opportunity and say, “Baa, let’s take it back!” It’s at this point that Farmer Brown realizes how chilly his sheep are without their wool, so he sits down and knits each sheep a brightly colored cardigan.

The story is adorable and kids actually learn how the wool from sheep is turned into sweaters! I definitely recommend Farmer Brown Shears His Sheep as a story parents can read to their small children or one children who are learning to read can read for themselves.
