The Fascination of Civil War Era Quilts

 QuiltingAndPatchwork.com
Civil War Era quilts provide fascination for quilters interested in history and needlework of prior eras. Much research has been done about quilts of those days and books written about them.
As I researched on this topic myself, I discovered Marcie’s Patchalot more blog and a post about the Civil War quilts she and a friend, Connie, have made…or are making.
I’m sure you’ll find Every Picture Tells a Story fascinating.  Perhaps it will provide you with ideas about a project you could undertake.
Stories about Civil War Quilts are somewhat related to my previous post, The Underground Quilt Controversy, since the events underlying all of them …read more

Making Quilts of Comfort

Quilts have comforted people since their first creation, whether covering someone for warmth, pulled over someone who is ill, sewn from family fabrics that bring memories to someone far from home, or simply giving pleasure with their artistic colors.
Quilts made in war time have comforted and warmed soldiers and families in war torn countries.  Women on both sides during the Civil War sent quilted items to their husbands, sons, and brothers on the front.  During other wars, women at home did their comforting this way when they couldn’t be there in person.
During World War II, Mennonite women in the United States …read more

So Many Kinds of Quilting Fabrics

When I began quilting during our country’s Bicentennial years (1975-76), there were only a few companies offering fabrics focused especially for quiltmakers and fabric artists.  I’m amazed now, when I visit quilt shops, web sites, online stores, and read magazine, to see such a variety of quilting fabrics.
Some of them center around a theme, era, event, region or country.  Others simply are fabrics that strike the manufacturer or designer’s fancy.  Also, quilt artists, once they become well-known, often design fabrics for a manufacturer. You’ll also find fabrics designed by quilter/authors, such as Jennifer Chiaverini (www.elmcreek.net ), who writes the Elm Creek Quilters novels. She designs …read more

Quilting with Barbara Brackman

For those desiring to learn more about America’s quilting heritage, the history of patterns, and fabrics, check into books researched and written by Barbara Brackman.  Since our quilting history and patchwork heritage fascinate me, I enjoy learning from Barbara’s books.
Barbara also has done much research into the quilters and quilting of the Civil War era, along with other pioneer eras.
Below are just a few of her many books and topics.

Civil War Era Quilts

Quilts from the Civil War era fascinate me.  Perhaps this is because I’m researching this period in United States history for several writing projects.  One of these involves my middle reader book-in-progress, Papa Goes to War, inspired by my family history.
One of the projects Mandy and local ladies undertake is making quilts for husbands, fathers, sons, and friends fighting on the battlefields far from home.
Two books that give considerable information about quilting in this era are:  Barbara Brackman’s Quilts from the Civil War and The Civil War Diary Quilt by Rosemary Youngs.
