Curcumin may offer relief from pain of cold sores

It isn’t anywhere near a treatment yet, but researcher may have put their finger on something that may help people who suffer from painful cold sores.
The researchers found that curcumin, a component of the curry spice turmeric, blocks herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) infections. This is the virus that causes cold sores.

Cold sores, caused by the herpes virus, are unsightly and often painful. They’re also very contagious. Many people who have them just suffer through them, while others have their own tried and true methods for dealing with them.
The fluid-filled blister is often on the lips. Although there are several types herpes virus, only two (herpes simplex types 1 and 2) cause cold sores. Because cold sores are so common, they aren’t usually officially diagnosed. They can be by taking a swab of the sore and sending it for a culture to see what type of virus grows.
