That’s because all of us have certain colors that look well on us, due to our skin tones, hair color, eye color and combination of these. Generally we instinctively go for the colors that look well on us, but we often don’t understand why.

That’s because all of us have certain colors that look well on us, due to our skin tones, hair color, eye color and combination of these. Generally we instinctively go for the colors that look well on us, but we often don’t understand why.

For instance, my granddaughter has always selected colors with warm undertones, such as lime green, apricot, aqua, cream and orange. They look lovely on her. However, my daughter and I, while we like the colors for our quiltmaking, don’t select them for our clothing. If we try to wear them, we don’t look our best.

I had never understood why I didn’t like to wear green even though it was my mom’s favorite color. She chose it for my clothes, until I made my own choices. However, after taking classes in color and color analysis, I understood that the greens Mother selected were not ones that looked good on me.

When selecting colors for your children to wear, or making comments about their choices, make sure you aren’t deciding upon something that looks lovely on you, but not on them or vice versa.

We all have favorite colors, often based on the colors that look good on us, appeal to us when decorating our home, office or studio, or simply are ones that make us feel good when working with them. I discovered, when I made quilts for sale, that I had to work with colors that weren’t my favorites.

Image: sxc.hu

Often customers would select colors for the items they commissioned that were ones I wouldn’t consider for my own use, but they looked lovely when coordinated in a picec of fabric art. When I made items to sell on consignment or to sell to shops, I had to consider that not everyone had the same color taste that I did.

After I took a class in color coding, or color analysis, and discovered why specific colors appealed to some people and others didn’t, why some colors looked good on some people and other colors didn’t, I understood much more about the effect of color in one’s wardrobe and in crafts.

So if you’re involved in crafts in which color is important, learn more about color, not just how colors are made and change in light and dark, but why one color looks good and appeals to one person, but another color doesn’t. This knowledge also will help you in working with colors you may not particularly like, but someone else simply loves.

I know what you’re thinking.

“But Loreal Excellence 5G has been my perfect color! I don’t know if I could change.”
“But navy blue is my signature color. People I know would look at me like I was crazy if I bought something red.”
“But I love my long hair, and men seem to like it. If I went shorter it would make me less attractive.”

To those statements I have one thing to say…

Wait for it…

Are you ready?

SO WHAT!?

You are in the process of creating a fabulous new you. You can’t do that in your navy blue wearin’, too long hangin’, same old hair colored self!

Listen up, because what I’m about to say is really important, okay?

If you’re sitting there wallowing in the doom and gloom of being single (like I often do), you need to do something to get out of it. No one else is going to come along and miraculously change your life for you – it’s ALL up to you. Fear is what’s holding you back if you’ve made any of those statements above. Fear of change, fear of the unknown, and fear of maybe finding something better.

Fear of finding something better? Yep.

So many times we get comfortable with our lives, despite that inner, gnawing feeling that it’s not right for us. You know as well as I do that your long hair is full of split ends. You know that red is a fabulous color to wear (especially on a date), and you know that going to a salon and getting a professional stylist to help you pick out a great hair color for your skin tone is going to make a world of difference for the better. You know this. And here’s the really special part: If you do cut your hair, and hate it… it grows back. If you do wear a red dress and someone looks at you shocked… it means they’ve noticed you. If you do change that dreary old brown to a fabulous sparkly red and you think it makes your cheeks too rosy, you can change to something else a couple weeks later. You’re NOT going to fall down and die just because something you try hasn’t worked out!

So ladies, your mission… your task: Do something different to reset your style. I don’t care if it’s even changing from your standard pink nail polish to something red or peachy. Just do SOMETHING that you don’t normally do when it comes to your style.

Post about it in the comments – let us know how it makes you feel, and don’t hold back!
