I mean who were they to tell me Cookie Monster no longer ate chocolate cookies, that was the one thing he craved.

IMG: Amazon.com

I bet they were thinking the Cookie Monster for those McDonald’s commercials due to all the obesity.
Maybe it is being noticed more now that Sesame Street just turned 40 Years Old or the fact that Michelle Obama was just on the show that dealt with a lot of veggetables and gardening. Maybe it is being focused on more because we have so many kids that would rather grab for the coookies instead of the carrot sticks and Cookie Monster would prefer his bunches of grapes. I say it is a good thing and they state Cookie isn’t saying NO to cookies, he’s just making a few healthier choices.

The original Sesame Street generation is in their late 30s and 40s now, there are still millions of younger Sesame Street fans around the world, watching the muppets’ antics and listening to their stories and songs in several different languages. So, considering how popular the franchise is, it’s no wonder that one of Sesame Street’s most popular muppets, Elmo, has been recruited to help children learn more about staying healthy amidst the H1N1 influenza phase.

All parents have gone through the handwashing thing with their children at some point. Some children learn it well and do it, others pay lip service and just run their hands under the water to make them look wet. But, if someone as influential as Elmo tells them how to wash their hands, the little ones may pay a bit more attention. After all, who’s more interesting and fun – Mom or Dad, or a red, giggly, furry friend with a funny name?

Would any other character have done? Cookie Monster is cute, but he’s got awful manners. Kermit doesn’t seem as popular among the youngest crowd and Miss Piggy, well, don’t forget – people still call this virus the Swine flu. Maybe not the poster child for this particular time. Ernie and Bert seem to have lost their popularity too, although many older generation Sesame Streeters remember them fondly.

So, what do you think? Will having Elmo sing songs about washing your hands and reminding you go sneeze in your elbow have any effect on the children?

I will readily admit that I was a Sesame Street kid. It was my mother’s quiet time. With four kids in the house (she babysat two and my older brother was at school) I am sure she needed it. But, not only did it give her some much needed quiet time but I it also gave us some extra academic input.

AJ is just now liking Sesame Street because he can just now comprehend what they are doing. When he first joined our family shows like The Wiggles were most entertaining for him because he did not have to know the language to understand that they were dancing and signing. Sesame Street, however, is more about shapes, letters, and numbers and takes much more comprehension.

However, he has always, always, loved Elmo. In fact, his first Halloween he chose to dress as Elmo even though he had no idea what was happening.

Last week we got a Sesame Street Cookie Monster Building Set in the mail and he was ecstatic. AJ loves to build and anything Sesame Street right now is right up his alley, even though he is five.

K’NEX has connected with Sesame Street to create these colorful and super chunky building pieces that are easy to snap together, stack up, and loads of fun. AJ loves building Cookie Monster and it really helps with his fine motor skills.

K’NEX boasts on their website that it helps with physical development (I assume they mean fine motor and eye hand coordination), social and emotional development (imaginative play), language (talking about the toy), and cognitive development. (sorting, patterns, stacking, etc).

One of the best things about K’NEX though is that they are eco-friendly (lead free), as the company is tied with Brio and Lincoln Logs.
